Art in the Air Opening this Friday, July 6th

ITHACA, JUNE 30, 2018 —  Downtown Ithaca is pleased to announce the return of Art in the Air, a community sourced banner art exhibit installed on twelve light poles along the Ithaca Commons. It will be on display on the Ithaca Commons starting in July and running through October.   An opening reception is planned for Friday, July 6th at 6:00pm at Trolley Circle on the Commons followed by a guided walking tour of the banners. Art in the Air 2018 winners will be in attendance to talk about their banner design on the tour.

The individual designs — a mix of paintings, drawings and photographs — on the banners are creations from this year’s Art in the Air’s contest winners. Each of the winners submitted original artwork to the Downtown Ithaca Alliance’s Art in the Air Contest this past spring. A panel of judges selected the winning artwork that will be featured on the banners. This year, the contest received more than 200 entries.

This years 12 winners were: Ivy Steven-Gupta, Linda Wyatt, Annie Zygarowicz, Patricia Brown, Nancy Ridenour, Charlene Brochoire, Daniel McPheeter, Sue Hertz, Cynthia Todd, Kathy Morris, Cassandra Jenis and Ryan Curtis.

The winners’ magnificent artworks inspired by water will be on display starting in July on the light posts on The Commons, adding color, variety, and beauty to the pedestrian mall. The banners will stay on display through October.

Come review these fantastic new pieces yourself during the Art in the Air opening reception and guided tour set for Friday, June 6th at 6:00 pm on the Commons. During the tour, which will immediately follow the reception, Art in the Air 2018 winners will talk about their banner design.

The reception and tour are included as part of July’s Gallery Night Ithaca presented by Tompkins Trust Company, a walking tour where visitors can attend art openings at dozens of art galleries, shops and businesses hosting art exhibits. Gallery Night Ithaca happens from 5:00pm – 8:00pm on the first Friday of each month.
