ITHACA, MAY 2, 2019 — This winter, Downtown Ithaca will host a new special holiday event, the Winter Light Festival, presented by Tompkins Trust Company and organized by the Downtown Ithaca Alliance (DIA). The festival will feature Prismatica, an art trail of 25 luminous and interactive prisms.
Each prism stands more than seven feet tall and is covered in a dichroic film that reflects all the colors of the rainbow depending on the light and the viewing angle. After sunset, internal projectors light up the interactive kaleidoscope giving the project an additional dimension.
For 11 days, December 5 through 15, Prismatica will brighten the highly trafficked Commons pedestrian mall on East State Street and showcase how creativity can enliven this space. As visitors wander among and interact with the exhibit, they will enjoy an infinite interplay of lights and extremely colorful reflections.
“This will be a visual spectacle unlike anything we’ve seen here before. You can walk up to the prisms and spin them. As they spin, their light reflection will change and chimes will emanate from the prism. They will shine at night because of the illuminating effect, and during the day they’ll reflect a subtle glow,” says Summer Keown, special events director for the DIA.
Events during the festival will include annual favorites Chowder Cook-off and Santa’s Arrival, both presented by Maguire Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram & Fiat. Additional pop-up activities during the 11-day festival will include a Silent Disco, storytelling, a hot cocoa bar, and other demonstrations and entertainment for all ages. The full schedule of events will be included on the festival page at downtownithaca.com.
This festival and light installation would not be possible without the support from local businesses such as presenting sponsor Tompkins Trust Company.
“As Central New York’s community bank, local is at the heart of who we are and what we do. And one of the best parts of being a locally driven community bank is the rewarding relationship with our partners and friends at Downtown Ithaca Alliance. We sponsor DIA events because DIA shares our core belief that local is powerful and investing in our community is integral to the success of all of us in Ithaca and Central New York. We are looking forward to this year’s Winter Light Festival and are thrilled to be a sponsor,” says Audre Seals, marketing communications business partner for Tompkins Trust Company.
The festival is made possible in part by the Tompkins County Tourism Program.
