ITHACA NY JUNE 9, 2020 — Homegrown Skateshop, a specialty store in Downtown Ithaca since 2005, recently held an online raffle that garnered nearly $50,000 to benefit The Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC) and Social Ventures, a pair area youth programs affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Homegrown Skateshop owner Andrew Douglas partnered with Jeff Furman, a former Board of Directors Chairman at Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream and founder of the nonprofit organization Social Venture, and Jay Stooks, a program coordinator at GIAC, to organize the Ben & Jerry’s “Chunky Dunky” Boost Benefit, a raffle where participants could enter for a chance to win a pair of recently released Ben & Jerry’s x Nike SB Dunk Low “Chunky Dunky” sneakers.

“As soon as I found out that Nike SB was collaborating on a Dunk with Ben & Jerry’s, I knew that the demand for this release would be extremely high and presented a unique opportunity to leverage this energy in an effort to give something back to the community. I reached out to Jeff (Furman) about turning the release into a fundraiser that would help support this community. Jeff is a longtime advocate for skateboarding and the youth of this community, so partnering with him on this release was 100% the best thing to do.  Also, I’ve been supporting the GIAC’s skateboard camp for as long as my shop has been in business,” says Douglas.

More than 35,000 people entered the sneaker raffle, raising a total of $49,317. GIAC will receive $45,000 of those funds for program and staff support to combat the effects of its temporary shutdown.

GIAC Director Leslyn McBean-Clairborne was overcome with gratitude by Homegrown’s incredibly generous donation.

“GIAC is profoundly grateful to Andrew and Homegrown Skateshop for his steady kindness to GIAC and his authentic commitment to advancing the social justice agenda that GIAC promotes in everything we do. At GIAC we provide services to improve the quality of life of those we serve and we rely on the support of our business community, among others, to help us do that. This is a perfect example of a partnership in action. A perfect example of Andrew using the platform he knows best to give back and create some equity. Like all our services, GIAC’s skateboard program impacts the lives of the participants in long-lasting ways that go beyond skateboarding,” says McBean-Clairborne.

The funding will be allocated as follows:

  • $20,000 to Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC) to help restart its programs that serve over 300 young people throughout the year.

  • $15,000 to GIAC for its skateboard program.

  • $10,000 to GIAC to enhance supplies in the GIAC culinary program, and to provide more food to the community.

  • $4,317 to Social Ventures to enhance its Youth Voting and Civic Engagement efforts.
