SUMMARY:"The Architecture of the Self": A Summer Somatic Series
DESCRIPTION:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE\nTeaching Ithaca Wellness Launches “The Architecture of the Self”: A Summer Somatic Series\nITHACA\, NY — Local educator and wellness coach Alison Rawlins\, founder of Teaching Ithaca Wellness\, LLC\, is proud to announce a new 8-part workshop series\, “The Architecture of the Self\,” running Sunday afternoons from July 19 through September 6.\nAt the heart of this series is the debut of the Concentric Boundaries curriculum—a somatic guide designed to help participants move past intellectualized “rules” and into the felt-sense reality of their personal space. By framing emotional and professional security through architectural metaphors\, Rawlins invites the community to rebuild their internal infrastructure with kindness and clarity.\nA Somatic Sunday Rhythm Each session takes place from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Rawlins’ home studio in Ithaca. The afternoons are structured to facilitate deep transition:\nThe Welcome Circle: Setting the architectural theme.\nThe Snack & Shift: A light nourishment break to move from “thinking” to “sensing.”\nArtistic Exploration: Hands-on creative work to map the internal self.\nClosing: Integrating the blueprint before the week begins.\nThe Summer Schedule:\nJuly 19: Part 1 – The Foundation\nJuly 26: Part 2 – The Threshold\nAugust 2: Part 3 – The Windows (THINK Filter)\nAugust 9: Part 4 – The Observation Deck\nAugust 16: Part 5 – Tapestries & Bivouacs\nAugust 23: Part 6 – Clarity is Kindness\nAugust 30: Part 7 – Conflict as a Gateway\nSeptember 6: Part 8 – The Renovation Blueprint\nLogistics & Materials Participants are encouraged to bring a dedicated journal and a sketchbook specifically for this course to document their somatic evolution. While the workshops are held in a cozy home environment\, Rawlins notes with a wink that her “curious dogs” will be safely contained so the group can focus on the work at hand.\nInvestment:\nFull 8-Week Blueprint: $100 suggested donation (Includes weekly coaching check-ins).\nA La Carte: $10–$35 suggested donation per session.\nAbout Teaching Ithaca Wellness\, LLC: Teaching Ithaca Wellness provides mindfulness-based art curriculum and therapeutic coaching to the Ithaca community\, focusing on empowering individuals through creative expression and boundary work.\nContact: Alison Rawlins Teaching Ithaca Wellness\, LLC teachingithacawellness.com (607) 280-4538\nwww.teachingithacawellness.com

SUMMARY:The Land of Everlasting Sky: Jill Swenson in Conversation with Eleanor Henderson
DESCRIPTION:About the book: For fans of the series Finding Your Roots\, a compelling memoir about how land connects us all—and how\, if we are to mend our relations to each other and the earth\, we must first reckon with our past\, no matter how distant\, shameful\, or tragic. \nWhen Jill Swenson returns to her mother’s hometown after her funeral\, she finds a new Seven Clans Casino under construction in Warroad\, Minnesota\, on Lake of the Woods. There\, she learns\, Red Lake Nation has recently dispossessed descendants of Ojibway spiritual leader Kakaygeesick from their land—land where the family has lived for the last two centuries—and has also denied them tribal membership. \nIn searching for answers\, Jill meets the great-grandson of Kakaygeesick. Over weeks\, months\, and years\, a friendship forms between them\, and Jill gradually discovers what allotments\, blood quantum\, and the history of the Bureau of Indian Affairs have to do with her\, the great-granddaughter of immigrants who homesteaded on reservation land. Estranged from her father\, still mourning the suicide of her husband and the loss of their farm in upstate New York\, and now grieving her mother’s death\, Jill has spent decades trying to put the past behind her—but discovers the only path forward is to reckon with history. \nClear-eyed and yet deeply personal\, The Land of Everlasting Sky is a compelling exploration of the history we inherit and our relationships to land and each other. \nAbout the author: Jill D. Swenson grew up in the Twin Cities and moved to Wisconsin in high school. She graduated from Lawrence University and earned an MA and PhD from The University of Chicago before going on to teach journalism and media studies at the University of Georgia-Athens and earn tenure at Ithaca College. For a decade she lived off the grid on a small-scale sustainable farm in upstate New York; now she lives in Appleton\, Wisconsin\, where she works as an editor and literary consultant\, belongs to a curling club and a poetry group\, and enjoys walking her dog. \nEleanor Henderson is the author of two novels and a memoir\, Everything I Have is Yours. She is a professor of fiction writing at Ithaca College and is working on a new novel\, The Galaxy.

SUMMARY:King Alcohol Ends Reign: Ithaca’s Prohibition History Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:In the early 1900s\, Ithaca\, NY earned some colorful nicknames: “Sodom\,” “Sin City\,” and “Rum Town\, USA.” Long before national Prohibition took hold\, Ithacans were already battling over booze\, morality\, and modernity. \n“King Alcohol Ends Reign” is a 10-block walking tour through downtown Ithaca that traces the city’s spirited (and often surprising) history with Prohibition. Led by trained docents from The History Center\, this 60–70 minute experience takes you to the actual sites of speakeasies\, dry raids\, church protests\, saloons\, and reform rallies—uncovering how Ithaca became one of the first cities in New York State to go dry. \nThrough historic images\, newspaper headlines\, and stories of resistance and reform\, you’ll see the city in a whole new light. Whether you’re a local or just visiting\, you’ll never look at downtown Ithaca the same way again. \nTours are Thursday-Saturday at 5:30 PM \nWhat: 75 minute walking tour \nWhere: The History Center in Tompkins County\, 110 N Tioga St\, Ithaca NY 14850 \nWho: This tour is designed for ages 16-116 \nWear Comfortable Shoes\, Bring an Umbrella\, Jacket\, and Water Bottle \nWeather – this tour takes place rain or shine! SUMMARY:"Seeing Ithaca Through the Eyes of Artists"
DESCRIPTION:Seeing Ithaca\, August 2026 \nThe State of the Art Gallery will be sponsoring “Seeing Ithaca: Through the Eyes of Artists” for the fourth year. It will take place in galleries and artist studios during the month of August\, 2026 and is a celebration of art and artists in the Ithaca area. \nThe State of the Art Gallery members will each show Ithaca inspired work in the gallery and many will have invited guests show with them. A special feature this year is a wall dedicated to school children who have been part of the gallery’s outreach program. Students from Belle Sherman\, Beverly J. Martin\, and Ithaca High School will display their art in the gallery. That inclusion is always very popular with parents and friends of the young artists. \nThe Gallery will host several special events during the month. First Friday Gallery Night is August 7th\, 5-8 P.M. This event usually attracts hundreds of visitors. The monthly “Look Club” will take place on Sunday\, August 16th\, 2-3 P.M. at the gallery and is open to all to join the discussion of how to really look at art. The Ithaca Garden Club will have a special collaboration in the gallery over the weekend of August 21-23 (12-5 each day) to celebrate “Art in Bloom”. This event is an opportunity for garden club designers to create an arrangement that reflects the essence of their chosen piece of art on the walls. This has become a very popular weekend to share the creativity of the floral arrangers. \nOn August 29th from 12 to 5 pm\, many artists\, listed on the website\, will open their working studios to the public\, and visitors can have a deeper look into their art making process. Studios are located throughout Tompkins county. The State of the Art Gallery will be open that afternoon as well\, with several gallery members available for informal art talks. \nWe have a dedicated website\, seeingithaca.org \, that lists all the galleries involved with this project as well as all the artists with open studios. The other galleries that will be celebrating this event are The Gallery at South Hill (950 Danby Road)\, Danby Gathery Art Works (1774 Danby Road) and the Mink Gallery (614 N. Cayuga Street). \nThe organizers are hoping not only to have great displays of the art\, but also to get artists and art lovers to meet and expand the liveliness and community of all of Ithaca.

SUMMARY:For the Love of Labor: The Life of Pauline Newman
DESCRIPTION:Join Cathryn J. Prince for an author reading\, in conversation with Jill Swenson! \nAbout the book: From her start as one of the youngest activists in US history\, Pauline Newman helped shape the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union (ILGWU) into a dominant force in industrial America. Cathryn J. Prince tells the story of a self-educated Jewish immigrant who dedicated herself to a legion of causes and lifelong battles against sexism and classism. \nPrince follows Newman’s life from a youth split between Lithuania and New York City sweatshops to her work as an advisor to New Deal–era labor secretary Frances Perkins. Newman’s long hours at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory informed her entrée into labor activism. In the following years\, she tirelessly advocated for workers\, ran for New York Secretary of State as a socialist\, and became the first woman to serve as the ILGWU general organizer. Her interest in the health of workers led to service on the Joint Board of Sanitary Control and a decades-long term as education director of the ILGWU health center. Membership in Eleanor Roosevelt’s circle opened doors to government positions and advisory roles that continued into the postwar era. Prince also weaves in the details of Newman’s fifty-year relationship with a woman\, her struggles with her sexual identity\, and her final years. \nEngaging and panoramic\, For the Love of Labor is the first major biography of an important figure in labor and women’s history. \nAbout the author: Cathryn J. Prince is an adjunct professor of journalism at Fordham University. Her books include Queen of the Mountaineers: The Trailblazing Life of Fanny Bullock Workman and American Daredevil: The Extraordinary Life of Richard Halliburton\, the World’s First Celebrity Travel Writer.
