SUMMARY:King Alcohol Ends Reign: Ithaca’s Prohibition History Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:In the early 1900s\, Ithaca\, NY earned some colorful nicknames: “Sodom\,” “Sin City\,” and “Rum Town\, USA.” Long before national Prohibition took hold\, Ithacans were already battling over booze\, morality\, and modernity. \n“King Alcohol Ends Reign” is a 10-block walking tour through downtown Ithaca that traces the city’s spirited (and often surprising) history with Prohibition. Led by trained docents from The History Center\, this 60–70 minute experience takes you to the actual sites of speakeasies\, dry raids\, church protests\, saloons\, and reform rallies—uncovering how Ithaca became one of the first cities in New York State to go dry. \nThrough historic images\, newspaper headlines\, and stories of resistance and reform\, you’ll see the city in a whole new light. Whether you’re a local or just visiting\, you’ll never look at downtown Ithaca the same way again. \nTours are Thursday-Saturday at 5:30 PM \nWhat: 75 minute walking tour \nWhere: The History Center in Tompkins County\, 110 N Tioga St\, Ithaca NY 14850 \nWho: This tour is designed for ages 16-116 \nWear Comfortable Shoes\, Bring an Umbrella\, Jacket\, and Water Bottle \nWeather – this tour takes place rain or shine! In case of severe weather\, we’ll determine cancellations by 10:30 am the morning-of.

By age of 25\, Curley had played drums with some of Louisiana’s musical legends\, including: CC Adcock\, Steve Riley\, John Hart\, “L’il” Bob and the Lollipops\, and his uncle’s\, “L’il” Buck Senegal and Wayne “Blue” Burns. At 25 Curley hit the road with his own band “Zydeco Trouble” delivering Zydeco with a rich Soul\, Gospel\, Hip Hop-tinged sound. Curley Taylor & Zydeco Trouble tours extensively throughout the US\, playing festivals and clubs from New York to San Diego and Florida to Seattle. Often playing for audiences who have never heard Zydeco music before\, making fans wherever they go. His bluesy\, soulful vocals and the band’s hard driving Zydeco beat blend to create high-energy dance music for all audiences. SUMMARY:33 1/3 Reading with Kevin Dunn\, Michael T. Fournier\, Bob Proehl\, and Elizabeth Sandifer
DESCRIPTION:Autumn Leaves Books and Angry Mom Records are excited to bring a 33 1/3 extravaganza to Ithaca. Kevin Dunn\, author of a new book on Stiff Little Fingers’ Inflammable Material\, will be joined by other fabulous 33 1/3 writers Michael T. Fournier\, Bob Proehl\, and Elizabeth Sandifer. \nSituating Stiff Little Fingers and their groundbreaking 1979 debut within the context of The Troubles\, Dunn’s book explores the band’s complicated and controversial relationship with the Belfast punk scene\, a scene that actively defied violent social divisions to create important non-sectarian spaces through which an “Alternative Ulster” was imagined and put into practice. \nThis event is free. Join us upstairs on the mezzanine. Keep in mind\, seating is limited. \nAbout the authors:\nKevin Dunn is Professor in the International Relations Department at Hobart and William Smith Colleges\, USA. He is author of Global Punk: Resistance and Rebellion in Everyday Life (Bloomsbury 2016)\, Inside African Politics (with Pierre Englebert; 2013\, 2020\, and 2026)\, as well as the award-winning novel Vicious is My Middle Name (2022). Active in DIY punk scenes since the 1980s\, he continues to perform in several bands\, runs an independent record label\, publishes various zines\, and is a regular contributor to the influential DIY punk zine Razorcake. \nMichael T. Fournier is the author of the novel The Impasse (St. Rooster Books 2024)\, Double Nickels on the Dime (Continuum/Bloomsbury\, 2007)\, Hidden Wheel (Three Rooms Press\, 2011)\, and Swing State (Three Rooms Press\, 2014). He graduated from University of Maine’s MA program where he won the Steven Grady Award for fiction. His writing has appeared in Razorcake as well as Pitchfork\, McSweeney’s Internet Tendency\, Vice\, Electric Literature\, Oxford American\, Boston Globe and more. He is co-founder of Outer Frequencies\, a not-for-profit group devoted to bringing independent artists to Cape Cod. \nBob Proehl is the author of The Nobody People and A Hundred Thousand Worlds\, a Booklist best book of the year. He has worked as a bookseller and programming director for Buffalo Street Books in Ithaca\, New York\, a DJ\, a record store owner\, and a bartender. He was a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow in Fiction and a resident at the Saltonstall Arts Colony. His work has appeared on Salon\, as part of the 33⅓ book series\, and in American Short Fiction. \nElizabeth Sandifer created Eruditorum Press. She blogs about the psychic history of comics and science fiction. She is author of TARDIS Eruditorum\, a history of Britain told through the lens of the Doctor Who sci-fi series. SUMMARY:Abolition of White Democracy Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:Description written by host\, Ashley Cake: I’ve been threatening to do a community read of Abolition of White Democracy for some years now\, and the time is finally nigh. Georgia at Ithaca Writing Studio is gonna host\, and I’m asking $30 for six meetups\, $20 for the Writing Studio and $10 for me. I’m capping it at 10 participants for space and “let’s take it easy” reasons and I’m asking for folks who are local\, can commit to reading the book and coming to all 6 Monday evening meetings\, and ideally are living that white democracy life. What do i mean? You check a majority of these boxes: \n– you are a person of pallor (and not defensive or penitential about it) \n– You have a liberal arts education with at least a BA \n– You have a vehicle (maybe two\, lease ok) \n– You own your home (maybe two\, with mortgage ok) \n– you have investment accounts (IRA\, 401k\, mutual funds\, CDs\, etc) \n– you have life insurance \n– you are registered to vote as either a Democrat or a Republican \n– You serve(d) on boards and/or commissions (foundations\, PTAs\, not for profits\, city/county/state appointments\, etc. mutual aid doesn’t count) \n– Relatively high earning (80k – 200k/year) \n– Manager or C-suite for most of your career \n– Broadly familiar with North Atlantic political and social histories and thinkers of race & class (especially W.E.B. Dubois\, Karl Marx\, Michel Foucault\, James Baldwin\, Thomas Jefferson\, Alexis de Tocqueville\, Malcolm X\, et. al.) \nI won’t turn away anyone who wants to commit to the reading group (up to ten participants)\, but you will get the most out of this conversation if you’re navigating racial capitalism without too much trouble. I can make a PDF of the book available for free and everyone should read it\, and participants should be able to order copies through our independent bookstores and pay full price. \nI believe white democracy is white people’s problem because we built it with our ambitions and maintain it with our participation. I believe it’s possible for white folks to unravel these genocidal structures\, and there’s no better time than now. \nBio: Ashley Cake was born and raised in Ithaca\, NY and has been a lifelong service worker in the hospitality industry\, most recently owning and operating The Watershed & The Downstairs. She is an award-winning labor and public safety advocate\, serving on the boards of organizations from Ithaca Underground to Alternatives Federal Credit Union. In her academic career\, Ashley has written and taught extensively on Enwhitenment European philosophy — particularly Soren Kierkegaard and Lacanian psychoanalysis — as well as comparative religion — particularly American social justice and liberationist histories. Her current praxis seeks to work the critical junctures of abolition\, emergent strategies of care and transformative justice\, which is to say: Land Back & Reparations.

SUMMARY:Reading and Conversation: The Loyalist's Wife
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reading of The Loyalist’s Wife by Deirdre Sinnott in conversation with Karen Pavelka! \nAbout the book: It’s 1777 in New York’s fertile Mohawk Valley\, and tenant farmers Jane and Philip Hopper have very different ideas about the war for independence that has consumed the 13 colonies. To Philip\, rebellion against the king is appalling. But Jane\, recovering from the death of a newborn son\, has taken solace from the hope embedded in the simple phrase “the pursuit of happiness.” \nThe war comes home when Philip is arrested for his Loyalist views and then escapes\, leaving Jane to fend for herself. She is brought before the Patriot’s Commission to Detect and Defeat Conspiracies. One wrong move could land her in the Watchhouse. Help comes in the form of Lady Prudence Safford who puts Jane under her protection. However\, it is not without cost. \nWith its rich panorama of characters\, including a Hessian deserter\, Jane’s alcoholic brother\, and his wife\, a member of the Oneida Indian Nation\, The Loyalist’s Wife presents a unique perspective on America’s War of Independence. It is a timely and thrilling tale of American history and personal integrity. \nAbout the author: Deirdre Sinnott (she\, her\, they\, them) is the author of the novel “The Loyalist’s Wife: A Novel of the American Revolution” as well as “The Third Mrs. Galway” (Akashic Press\, 2021) She is a researcher and activist for social change. She grew up in Utica\, New York\, and graduated from Syracuse University. Sinnott speaks nationally about the role of Central New York’s residents in the abolition of slavery. She was the originator of Utica’s Abolition History Day Celebration and has directed two award-winning documentaries on mass incarceration and prison issues. She was a historical consultant for the Fort Stanwix Underground Railroad History Project\, funded by the National Park Service. She lives in New York City with her husband and also spends time in the Catskills.

The afternoons are structured to facilitate deep transition:\nThe Welcome Circle: Setting the architectural theme.\nThe Snack & Shift: A light nourishment break to move from “thinking” to “sensing.”\nArtistic Exploration: Hands-on creative work to map the internal self.\nClosing: Integrating the blueprint before the week begins.\nThe Summer Schedule:\nJuly 19: Part 1 – The Foundation\nJuly 26: Part 2 – The Threshold\nAugust 2: Part 3 – The Windows (THINK Filter)\nAugust 9: Part 4 – The Observation Deck\nAugust 16: Part 5 – Tapestries & Bivouacs\nAugust 23: Part 6 – Clarity is Kindness\nAugust 30: Part 7 – Conflict as a Gateway\nSeptember 6: Part 8 – The Renovation Blueprint\nLogistics & Materials Participants are encouraged to bring a dedicated journal and a sketchbook specifically for this course to document their somatic evolution.
