SUMMARY:BOOK SIGNING WITH DR. CHRIS ELLIS - RESILIENT CITIZENS: THE PEOPLE\, PERILS\, AND POLITICS OF MODERN PREPAREDNESS
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Buffalo Street Books with Dr. Chris Ellis for a discussion and signing of RESILIENT CITIZENS \nAbout the book: Resilience is a mindset. From war zones to wildfires\, pandemics to power outages\, the threats we face today seem bigger\, scarier\, and more unrelenting than ever before. Why\, then\, does society take a critical view of those who prepare for the worst while hoping for the best? Why do so many people write them off as crazy\, conspiracy-minded “doomsday preppers”?\nIn Resilient Citizens\, Army officer and disaster expert Dr. Chris Ellis challenges the myths\, dismisses the fearmongering\, and takes a much-needed\, long-overdue scholarly look not just at prepper culture in America\, but our overall social\, physical\, intellectual\, emotional\, and spiritual health. This isn’t another doomsday prepper guide or government-endorsed emergency brochure. It’s a deep dive into the people\, perils\, and politics of preparedness—from ranchers in the Rockies to policymakers globally—and a call to action for those who refuse to outsource their safety to luck or bureaucracy. \nAbout the author: Dr. Chris Ellis is a career Army officer\, disaster readiness expert\, and lifelong student of how people\, communities\, and nations prepare for the worst. With over twenty-six years of military service—including time in combat zones and collaborative work across five continents—Chris has seen firsthand what resilience looks like under pressure.\nChris holds a Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University\, along with four other advanced degrees covering public policy\, military strategy\, and international security. His work blends academic insight with boots-on-the-ground experience\, tackling big-picture threats like civil unrest\, nuclear catastrophe\, economic collapse\, and even the end of the world.

SUMMARY:Art Opening at MIX Art Gallery! "First Light" by Basil Bakhshi Opening Reception Friday\, Nov. 11th from 5-8PM
DESCRIPTION:This November 2025\, MIX Art Gallery presents First Light by Basil Bakhshi. Born in war-torn Pakistan\, Bakhshi lived on the streets until adoption brought him into a world of stability and creative possibility. Those beginnings left an enduring imprint on his vision\, one that recognizes tension and resilience as essential parts of beauty. \nNow based in New York’s Finger Lakes\, Bakhshi draws inspiration from the region’s shifting light and tranquil landscapes. His work spans oil painting and ceramics\, guided by the Japanese concept of shibumi: an unpretentious\, balanced beauty that reveals itself through simplicity and depth. His art carries the rawness of experience while offering stillness and reflection. \nBakhshi’s plein-air oil painting\, awarded Best in Show in French Alezum\, Pennsylvania\, affirmed his commitment to painting directly from life. In First Light\, he exhibits alongside his partner\, Billie Bakhshi\, whose debut features lively\, affordable works that radiate warmth and joy. Together\, their practices explore contrast and harmony; two expressions of a shared pursuit to find beauty in the everyday. \nTo celebrate the exhibition\, Basil Bakhshi is offering a complimentary “Abstract Portrait” with the purchase of any work. “Each color becomes a heartbeat\, each line a whisper of presence\,” he explains. “Through abstraction\, I reveal memory\, mood\, and the inner rhythm of being.” \nMIX Art Gallery is open Thursdays and Fridays from 3 -7 PM\, and Saturdays from 12 -6 PM\, at 156 E. State St. on the Ithaca Commons. Visit www.mixartgallery.com or shop online at https://www.mixartgallery.com/shop-artists.
