DESCRIPTION:Raw Pages is a monthly writing circle where fiction and CNF writers can come together to share their “raw” writing in an open\, nonjudgemental\, nurturing environment. \nThe title “Raw Pages” comes from the photography world where the artist has the option to shoot “raw” leaving their work opportunity to be more flexible to future editing. \nThis group has evolved into a circle where writers have 5 minutes each to share a work of CNF or fiction that is new\, unedited\, and not yet ready for critical feedback. This an opportunity to share work with others and swap ideas about writing that is still in the planning stages and needing encouragement. So far there is a cast of writers who have come to know each other and the writing their peers are currently working on. We always welcome new folks! \nBring a piece of writing that is 5 minutes read out loud\, feel free to bring some copies if you want others to read along while you read out loud. The event is free and open to the public — no registration required. \nThe forum will bring together members of the City of Ithaca’s Special Committee on Wrongful Discharge and Labor Protections alongside a panel of local business owners\, property owners\, and community stakeholders. A public question-and-answer session will follow. \nThe Special Committee was established by the Mayor and Common Council to evaluate potential legislation that would move the City away from at-will employment practices and require documented justification — or “just cause” — before an employer can terminate a worker. The Committee is charged with gathering broad stakeholder input before any legislation is drafted\, and the Downtown Ithaca Alliance is specifically named as a community partner in that process. \nThis roundtable discussion represents an important opportunity for Downtown businesses and stakeholders to learn about the proposal\, understand its potential implications\, and make their voices heard. \nThe event is free and open to all members of the public. DESCRIPTION:Description written by host\, Ashley Cake:  I’ve been threatening to do a community read of Abolition of White Democracy for some years now\, and the time is finally nigh. Georgia at Ithaca Writing Studio is gonna host\, and I’m asking $30 for six meetups\, $20 for the Writing Studio and $10 for me. I’m capping it at 10 participants for space and “let’s take it easy” reasons and I’m asking for folks who are local\, can commit to reading the book and coming to all 6 Monday evening meetings\, and ideally are living that white democracy life. What do i mean? You check a majority of these boxes: \n– you are a person of pallor (and not defensive or penitential about it) \n– You have a liberal arts education with at least a BA \n– You have a vehicle (maybe two\, lease ok) \n– You own your home (maybe two\, with mortgage ok) \n– you have investment accounts (IRA\, 401k\, mutual funds\, CDs\, etc) \n– you have life insurance  \n– you are registered to vote as either a Democrat or a Republican \n– You serve(d) on boards and/or commissions (foundations\, PTAs\, not for profits\, city/county/state appointments\, etc. mutual aid doesn’t count) \n– Relatively high earning (80k – 200k/year) \n– Manager or C-suite for most of your career \n– Broadly familiar with North Atlantic political and social histories and thinkers of race & class (especially W.E.B. Dubois\, Karl Marx\, Michel Foucault\, James Baldwin\, Thomas Jefferson\, Alexis de Tocqueville\, Malcolm X\, et. al.) \nI won’t turn away anyone who wants to commit to the reading group (up to ten participants)\, but you will get the most out of this conversation if you’re navigating racial capitalism without too much trouble. I can make a PDF of the book available for free and everyone should read it\, and participants should be able to order copies through our independent bookstores and pay full price. \nI believe white democracy is white people’s problem because we built it with our ambitions and maintain it with our participation. I believe it’s possible for white folks to unravel these genocidal structures\, and there’s no better time than now. \nBio: Ashley Cake was born and raised in Ithaca\, NY and has been a lifelong service worker in the hospitality industry\, most recently owning and operating The Watershed & The Downstairs. She is an award-winning labor and public safety advocate\, serving on the boards of organizations from Ithaca Underground to Alternatives Federal Credit Union. In her academic career\, Ashley has written and taught extensively on Enwhitenment European philosophy — particularly Soren Kierkegaard and Lacanian psychoanalysis — as well as comparative religion — particularly American social justice and liberationist histories. Her current praxis seeks to work the critical junctures of abolition\, emergent strategies of care and transformative justice\, which is to say: Land Back & Reparations.

In the lead-up to July 4\, 2026\, participating local writers have created short pieces in response to brief phrases taken directly from the Declaration of Independence. These personal stories are not editorials\, but provide a snapshot into this moment in American history\, a period with uncanny parallels to 1776. \nAt a time when our federal government threatens to silence and censor free speech\, We Declare is an act of rebellion to speak out; when they seek to divide us\, we stand together; when they spread hate\, we listen to one another with love and respect. The stories amplify compelling voices with the goal of building greater community through increased understanding and empathy.   \n2026 marks two anniversaries:  the 250th of the Declaration of Independence\, and the 20th of Ellen Schmidt’s Ithaca-based Writing Room community. From across the US and 15 countries\, more than 100  people have participated in Ellen Schmidt’s classes.  Some have moved far away\, we’ve seen each other through illnesses\, births\, deaths and a pandemic. We’ve learned the power of expressing ourselves and listening deeply to one another through the gift of writing. Now we invite you to share in this powerful experience. \nWe Declare writers are giving two performances on June 27 at the Kitchen Theatre Company in Ithaca\, at 1 pm and 4 pm.
