DESCRIPTION:About the Event \nA. Lynn Smith will be at Buffalo Street Books to discuss her book Memory Wars: Settlers and Natives Remember Washington’s Sullivan Expedition of 1779. Memory Wars explores how commemorative sites and patriotic fanfare marking the mission of General John Sullivan into Iroquois territory during the Revolutionary War continue to shape historical understandings today. Sullivan’s expedition was ordered by General George Washington at a tenuous moment of the Revolutionary War. It was a massive enterprise involving thousands of men who marched across northeastern Pennsylvania into what is now New York state\, to eliminate any present or future threat from the British-allied Iroquois Confederacy. Sullivan and his men carried out a scorched-earth campaign\, obliterating more than forty Iroquois villages\, including homes\, fields\, and crops. For Indigenous residents it was a catastrophic invasion. For many others the expedition yielded untold bounty: American victory over the British along with land and fortunes beyond measure for settlers who soon moved onto the razed village sites. \nThe Sullivan Expedition has long been fixed on the landscape of Pennsylvania and New York by a cast of characters\, including amateur historians\, newly formed historical societies\, and local chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Asking how it is that people continue to “celebrate Sullivan” in the present day\, Memory Wars underscores the symbolic value of the past as well as the dilemmas posed to contemporary Americans by the national commemorative landscape. \nAbout the Author \nDr. A. Lynn Smith is a historical anthropologist whose research explores settler colonialism\, memory and forgetting\, colonialism and place-loss. She is professor of anthropology at Lafayette College\, Easton\, PA. Her new book\, Memory Wars: Settlers and Natives Remember Washington’s Sullivan Expedition of 1779\, contrasts the official story of a Revolutionary War expedition with that told by Seneca and other Native American leaders and at Haudenosaunee cultural centers. Previous publications consider colonial nostalgia with the award-winning Colonial Memory and Postcolonial Europe: Maltese Settlers in Algeria and France (2006); the silencing of Native and Latino voices in local history museums in the American southwest; and the role of place-loss in community identities in the aftermath of forced removal in Rebuilding Shattered Worlds: Creating Community by Voicing the Past (2016).

She has created quilts for members of her family\, members of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in celebration of the 140th Commencement of Hampton University and quilts honoring the service of USMC NCO’s in her family. \nMs. Mims will show her most recent oral history quilt created with 33 English Juniors Honors Students from Tompkins County. DESCRIPTION:Building Bridges – Historic Bridges Across Tompkins County\nSEPTEMBER 23RD – 24TH \nTraverse Tompkins started in the fall of 2020 as a unique fundraiser to support The History Center in Tompkins County during the COVID-19 pandemic. Executive Director Benjamin Sandberg biked all around the county\, live streaming videos exploring historical points of interest in each municipality. His challenge was to ride as many miles as possible in a single 24-hour period. We now invite all of our community to join us as we Traverse Tompkins and discover local history. \nThe basic premise is simple – how many miles can you bike\, run\, paddle\, or travel in a 24-hour period and how much can you learn about Tompkins County bridges while exploring? Support a registered cyclist or runner\, or register to join us this year! \nThere are two ways to participate and join the effort to keep our history alive. \nOption 1: Sign up for free and commit to asking your community for pledges to support your travels. Fueled by your obvious love for history and Tompkins County\, reach out to your friends\, family\, and colleagues to pledge their support for your challenge. DESCRIPTION:Exhibit on display at the Cherry Gallery August 4th-September 17th \nWHEN: Exhibit Opening August 4th – 5-8pm \nExhibit on display weekends 1-5pm – August 4th-September 17th \nWHERE: The Cherry Gallery\, 130 Cherry St\, Ithaca NY 14850 \nIn 1973\, a brave group of big city homosexuals left the disparaging metropolis and bought a piece of land together out in Danby. They built shelters\, they planted gardens\, and they partied. A lot. They called themselves the Lavender Hill Collective. \nSo much has changed since 1973. What used to be unspoken – and even censured! – about gender identity is now part of everyday vocabulary and culture. Reverence for the earth and home-grown food is as mainstream as “supermarkets” and more idealized than “convenience.” Communities of makers\, maker spaces\, and other artist groups sustain and unite us as politics urges us to split apart. \nWith this exhibition\, we celebrate the Lavender Hill collective as pioneering genderqueer artists. Along with art made by members of the collective\, we are also showing some contemporary pieces that channel the Lavender Hill legacy. Klein is a professor and former chair of the religion department at Rice University. She is also a lama in the Nyingma tradition and a founding director and resident teacher of Dawn Mountain\, a center for contemplative study and practice in Houston. Her publications include Path to the Middle; Unbounded Wholeness\, coauthored with Geshe Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche; Knowledge and Liberation; and most recently a translation of Khetsun Rinpoche’s Strand of Jewels. \nAbout the Book \nThis first volume in the House of Adzom series centers on Longchenpa’s seven trainings in bodhicitta\, our awakened mind\, the ultimate purpose of our practice and training. Anne Klein’s original composition masterfully weaves in Adzom Paylo Rinpoche’s commentary and Jigme Lingpa’s five pith practices and commentary on the trainings\, in keeping with Longchenpa’s skillful integration of sutra\, tantra\, and Dzogchen\, to resolve our most challenging questions about what awakening involves and how it relates to the truth of our human situation right now. If we reach capacity\, doors will close 5 minutes before the program is set to begin. \nABOUT THE EVENT \nJoin us for a BOOK TALK the week of Labor Day with author Al Davidoff\, the Cornell student leader who became a custodian and the union’s first president\, for a panel discussion on his newest work ‘Unionizing the Ivory Tower: Cornell Workers’ Fifteen-Year Fight for Justice and a Living Wage’. \nUnionizing the Ivory Tower chronicles how a thousand low-paid custodians\, cooks\, and gardeners succeeded in organizing a union at Cornell University. Al Davidoff\, the Cornell student leader who became a custodian and the union’s first president\, tells the extraordinary story of these ordinary workers with passion\, sensitivity\, and wit. \nHis memoir reveals how they took on the dominant power in the community\, built a strong organization\, and waged multiple strikes and campaigns for livable wages and their dignity. Their strategies and tactics were creative and feisty\, founded on worker participation and ownership. \nThe union’s commitment to fairness\, equity\, and economic justice also engaged these workers—mostly rural\, white\, and conservative—at the intersections of racism\, sexism\, classism\, and homophobia. DESCRIPTION:Tickets are $15/person. Pre-registration requested. \nJoin us as we explore stories of our P.L.A.C.E. (People\, Land\, Architecture\, Culture\, Enterprise) in the history of Ithaca. This tour is an excellent introduction to many facets of local community\, intriguing personalities\, and historic sites downtown. \nThis one-hour walking tour is led by Alan Cohen\, a docent at The History Center in Tompkins County. \nAll tours will meet in the atrium of the Tompkins Center for History & Culture (110 N Tioga St) on the Ithaca Commons. \n——————————— \nACCESSIBILITY – This guided tour is wheelchair and mobility device friendly! The tour traverses 0.4 miles of flat paved surfaces in Downtown Ithaca. The tour will be presented in English. If you have other questions please explore thehistorycenter.net/accessibility or contact us. \nCANCELLATION POLICY – This program supports educational programming from The History Center. We are unable to accommodate cancellations or refund ticket prices made less than two days in advance as we depend on these funds\, however if you contact us 24 hours in advance we are happy to re-schedule to any of our other walking tours this summer (thehistorycenter.net/tours). \nWEATHER POLICY – If there is inclement weather predicted for the day of the tour\, we will decide by 9am the morning of the tour whether to cancel or go ahead. Book club titles are 10% off in the store and online. \nAbout the Book \nOn the longest day of the summer\, twelve people sit cooped up with their families in a faded Scottish cabin park. The endless rain leaves them with little to do but watch the other residents. \nA woman goes running up the Ben as if fleeing; a retired couple reminisce about neighbours long since moved on; a teenage boy braves the dark waters of the loch in his red kayak. Each person is wrapped in their own cares but increasingly alert to the makeshift community around them. One particular family\, a mother and daughter without the right clothes or the right manners\, starts to draw the attention of the others. Tensions rise and all watch on\, unaware of the tragedy that lies ahead as night finally falls. \nAbout the Author \nSarah Moss is the award-winning author of six novels: Cold Earth\, Night Waking\, selected for the Fiction Uncovered Award in 2011\, Bodies of Light\, Signs for Lost Children and The Tidal Zone\, all shortlisted for the prestigious Wellcome Prize\, and her new book Ghost Wall\, out in September 2018. \nShe has also written a memoir of her year living in Iceland\, Names for the Sea\, which was shortlisted for the RSL Ondaatje Prize in 2013. \nSarah Moss is Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Warwick in England.

In “That Is Shocking\,” a college student relates a darkly funny story of romantic humiliation\, one that skirts the parallel story of a friend she betrayed. In others\, young women long for friends who have moved away\, or moved on. In “Cinnamon Baseball Coyote” and other linked stories about siblings Helen\, Evan\, and Grace\, their years of inside jokes and brutal tensions simmer over as the three spend a holiday season in a whirl of rivalry and mutual attachment\, and a generational gulf widens between them and their parents.
