APPLICATION REQUIRED for new volunteers – We need to do some behind-the-scenes prep-work for each session! \nWhat We’ll Be Doing \nHelp build the HistoryForge database for Tompkins County! We hold community transcription sessions twice a month on Saturdays from 11-1. In 2023 we will be working on the census records 1950 & 1870\, as well as for the Town of Caroline (1880-1950)\, and Trumansburg (1880-1950)! \nTo help with our behind the scenes processing of volunteer materials\, please complete the volunteer form at least 4 days before the session. \nComplete Volunteer Application \nHistoryForge is a digital mapping and transcription project from The History Center in Tompkins County. We need help digitizing information from the 1940 Ithaca census to add to our HistoryForge database! Volunteers will read through the handwritten census notes from 1940\, re-type/and or scan information about individuals\, buildings\, and businesses from that time period. \nYOU WILL NEED: A laptop or desktop computer\, stable internet connection. We have a limited number of volunteer laptops available. \nAbout HistoryForge \nHistoryForge is a digital history project from The History Center in Tompkins County which combines historic maps and photos with census records of the people who lived in Ithaca\, creating a way to visualize the history of Ithaca in the early 1900s. Learn more about the project here and the start of our database creation. \nNot available Saturdays but interested?\nContact Eve at HistoryForge@thehistorycenter.net \nThe HistoryForge project has been made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom. \nThe HistoryForge: Mapping Census Data to Visualize Local History grant was awarded in 2022-2024 through NEH’s Digital Humanities Advancement Grant program. The project was also selected to receive funding through NEH’s A More Perfect Union initiative. \n.\nLAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT\nThis project is digitizing post-colonization records of Tompkins County\, which is located in the traditional and contemporary lands of the Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫˀ Nation (often known by the mispronunciation Cayuga)\, one of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. SUMMARY:In This Together: A Conversation on Fighting the Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:“In This Together\,” explores how we can harness our social networks to make a real impact fighting the climate crisis. Against notions of the lone environmental crusader\, Marianne E. Krasny shows us the power of “network climate action”—the idea that our own ordinary acts can influence and inspire those close to us. Through this spread of climate-conscious practices\, our individual actions become collective ones that can eventually effect widespread change. Weaving examples of everyday climate-forward initiatives in with insights on behavioral and structural change\, Krasny demonstrates how we can scale up the impact of our efforts through leveraging our community connections. Whether by inviting family\, friends\, or colleagues to a plant-rich meal or by becoming activists at climate nonprofits\, we can forge the social norms and shared identities that can lead to change. With easy-to-follow dos and don’ts\, In This Together shows us a practical and hopeful way forward into our shared future.

SUMMARY:Legacies of Canoes - Book Talk & Screening @ Cinemapolis
DESCRIPTION:Legacies of Canoes – Book Talk & Screening w/ Trent Preszler and Hickory Edwards \nWHEN: Saturday May 6th 2023\, 6:45-8:45pm \nWHERE: Cinemapolis\, 120 Green St Ithaca NY 14850. \nPRESENTERS: Trent Preszler author of Little & Often: A Memoir\, and Hickory Edwards (Onondaga) from Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey \nKick off ITHACA CANOE FEST (May 7th @ Cass Park) with a combined book talk and film screening examining family and community legacies through deeply personal canoe journeys. Author Trent Preszler will introduce his book Little and Often: A Memoir\, followed by a screening of the 2020 Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey documentary. After the 45 minute documentary\, hear from both Hickory Edwards (Onondaga) about his experience rediscovering the historic pathways of the “Peacemaker” through his canoe journey\, and Trent on the history of boat building in his life in a panel discussion about their journeys to connect to family and community legacies through canoes. \nSCHEDULE OF EVENTS \n6:45pm – Doors open \n7:00pm – Introduction of Little and Often\, written by Trent Preszler\, with joined book signing. \n7:30pm – Screening of Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey \n8:15pm – Talkback with Hickory Edwards of the Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey\, and Trent Preszler discussing the role of canoes and boats in engaging with family/community inheritance and legacy. \n8:45pm – Conclusion of event. \nABOUT THE PRESENTERS \nLittle and Often: A Memoir – A USA Today Best Book of the Year\, Little and Often is the beautiful memoir of grief\, love\, the shattered bond between a father and son\, and the resurrection of a broken heart. Trent Preszler tells his story with the same level of art and craftsmanship that he brings to his boat making. Preszler’s only inheritance was a beat-up wooden toolbox that had belonged to his father\, who was a cattle rancher\, rodeo champion\, and Vietnam War Bronze Star Medal recipient. This family heirloom befuddled Preszler. He did not work with his hands—but maybe that was the point. In his grief\, he wondered if there was still a way to understand his father\, and with that came an epiphany: he would make something with his inheritance. Having no experience or training in woodcraft\, driven only by blind will\, he decided to build a wooden canoe\, and he would aim to paddle it on the first anniversary of his father’s death \nHaudenosaunee Canoe Journey – Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey is an adventurous firsthand account of one Onondaga man\, Hickory Edwards\, who has devoted his life to the rediscovery of the path of the “Peace Maker.” Relying on knowledge from elders and intuition to guide his team in the right direction\, Hickory Edwards hopes to navigate the full waterways and travelling routes long forgotten by his people. The documentary follows that thirteen-day journey\, exploring the ancient waterways of the five founding Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. It’ll also feature the evolving relationship between Hickory and his daughter\, Ellie as he tries to teach her about her people\, their ways and their culture. \n.\nLAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT\nThis event will take place in the traditional and contemporary lands of the Gayogo̱hó:nǫ’ Nation (Cayuga)\, one of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Its integration of historic maps\, census information\, photographs and archival documents provides a unique way for people to visualize and explore their local history through the people who lived there and the buildings and neighborhoods they lived in. HistoryForge also enables family historians to explore the community context which helped shaped the lives of their ancestors. HistoryForge began in Ithaca\, NY in 2016 at The History Center in Tompkins County. Its founders wanted to develop a platform that could be replicated in communities across the United States. Since 2020 it has expanded in Tompkins County and to other communities in New York and beyond. \nJoin Eve Snyder\, HistoryForge’s Director\, to learn more about this unique project and how to get involved. Eve Snyder\, PhD Eve Snyder is the Historian at The History Center in Tompkins County (THC) and the Project Director for THC’s open-source community digital history project\, HistoryForge. During her graduate studies\, she developed a passion for the digital humanities as a tool for increasing public engagement in history. \nThis event is hosted in collaboration with the Genealogy Center.

SUMMARY:“SPEAKING DANCE WISE #3: roundtable reflections with Tompkins County long term dancers\, movers and shakers”
DESCRIPTION:‘SPEAKING DANCE WISE’ #3 is part of a series of roundtable discussions providing opportunities for seasoned Tompkins County movement artists\, ‘elders’\, to share their knowledge and experience through conversations and presentations rooted in 20th and 21st century practices\, expressions\, and aesthetic shifts over multiple decades. The third ‘roundtable’ focuses on the work of featured guests; dancer/activist Gladys Brangman\, dancer/teacher Janice Kovar\, and teacher /choreographer Amanda Moretti.\nGladys Brangman has been teaching Hip Hop for the last 20 plus years having worked at the Trumansburg Dance Studio (with the amazing Lucille McGill)\, Jill Reeners School of Dance and Performing Arts and most recently at Jen X Academy of Dance. Her latest choreography\, “Tundra\,” was performed at Winterdance 2023 by the Ithaca Ballet Company. \nGuests will be addressing questions about their beginnings\, middle careers\, and where they are now\, as well as thoughts about the current “state of the art\,” and what to look for in the future. Dancer/choreographers Kathy Lucas and Jim Self will be moderating. \nKathy Lucas is a dancer\, choreographer\, and unconventional fitness trainer with over 30 years’ experience in movement arts. She is a co-founder and collaborator of 5 Sisters Performing Arts\, Ithaca NY where she teaches several fusion-style dance classes and facilitates monthly meetups of movement and storytelling through grief and loss.
