Author Trent Preszler will introduce his book Little and Often: A Memoir\, followed by a screening of the 2020 Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey documentary. After the 45 minute documentary\, hear from both Hickory Edwards (Onondaga) about his experience rediscovering the historic pathways of the “Peacemaker” through his canoe journey\, and Trent on the history of boat building in his life in a panel discussion about their journeys to connect to family and community legacies through canoes. \nSCHEDULE OF EVENTS \n6:45pm – Doors open \n7:00pm – Introduction of Little and Often\, written by Trent Preszler\, with joined book signing. \n7:30pm – Screening of Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey \n8:15pm – Talkback with Hickory Edwards of the Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey\, and Trent Preszler discussing the role of canoes and boats in engaging with family/community inheritance and legacy. \n8:45pm – Conclusion of event. \nABOUT THE PRESENTERS \nLittle and Often: A Memoir – A USA Today Best Book of the Year\, Little and Often is the beautiful memoir of grief\, love\, the shattered bond between a father and son\, and the resurrection of a broken heart. Trent Preszler tells his story with the same level of art and craftsmanship that he brings to his boat making. Preszler’s only inheritance was a beat-up wooden toolbox that had belonged to his father\, who was a cattle rancher\, rodeo champion\, and Vietnam War Bronze Star Medal recipient. This family heirloom befuddled Preszler. He did not work with his hands—but maybe that was the point. In his grief\, he wondered if there was still a way to understand his father\, and with that came an epiphany: he would make something with his inheritance. Having no experience or training in woodcraft\, driven only by blind will\, he decided to build a wooden canoe\, and he would aim to paddle it on the first anniversary of his father’s death \nHaudenosaunee Canoe Journey – Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey is an adventurous firsthand account of one Onondaga man\, Hickory Edwards\, who has devoted his life to the rediscovery of the path of the “Peace Maker.” Relying on knowledge from elders and intuition to guide his team in the right direction\, Hickory Edwards hopes to navigate the full waterways and travelling routes long forgotten by his people. The documentary follows that thirteen-day journey\, exploring the ancient waterways of the five founding Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Its integration of historic maps\, census information\, photographs and archival documents provides a unique way for people to visualize and explore their local history through the people who lived there and the buildings and neighborhoods they lived in. HistoryForge also enables family historians to explore the community context which helped shaped the lives of their ancestors. HistoryForge began in Ithaca\, NY in 2016 at The History Center in Tompkins County. Its founders wanted to develop a platform that could be replicated in communities across the United States. Since 2020 it has expanded in Tompkins County and to other communities in New York and beyond. \nJoin Eve Snyder\, HistoryForge’s Director\, to learn more about this unique project and how to get involved. Eve Snyder\, PhD Eve Snyder is the Historian at The History Center in Tompkins County (THC) and the Project Director for THC’s open-source community digital history project\, HistoryForge. During her graduate studies\, she developed a passion for the digital humanities as a tool for increasing public engagement in history. \nThis event is hosted in collaboration with the Genealogy Center. \nAbout HistoryForge \nHistoryForge is a digital history project from The History Center in Tompkins County which combines historic maps and photos with census records of the people who lived in Ithaca\, creating a way to visualize the history of Ithaca in the early 1900s. DESCRIPTION:‘SPEAKING DANCE WISE’ #3 is part of a series of roundtable discussions providing opportunities for seasoned Tompkins County movement artists\, ‘elders’\, to share their knowledge and experience through conversations and presentations rooted in 20th and 21st century practices\, expressions\, and aesthetic shifts over multiple decades. The third ‘roundtable’ focuses on the work of featured guests; dancer/activist Gladys Brangman\, dancer/teacher Janice Kovar\, and teacher /choreographer Amanda Moretti.\nGladys Brangman has been teaching Hip Hop for the last 20 plus years having worked at the Trumansburg Dance Studio (with the amazing Lucille McGill)\, Jill Reeners School of Dance and Performing Arts and most recently at Jen X Academy of Dance. She has had award winning dance teams that made it to national competitions. Gladys has taken a break from dance since the pandemic but is looking forward to getting back in the studio and becoming active in the local dance scene again. \nJanice Kovar\, a long time Ithaca resident\, has been fortunate to pursue her passion for dance within the upstate community. She has had a rewarding career studying\, observing\, choreographing\, teaching\, and performing modern dance. Over a lifetime\, she has literally exposed well over 3\,500 students to the joy of movement. \nAmanda Moretti is a choreographer and dance teacher living in Ithaca for the past 18 years. She studied at Naropa Institute and York University. Her latest choreography\, “Tundra\,” was performed at Winterdance 2023 by the Ithaca Ballet Company. \nGuests will be addressing questions about their beginnings\, middle careers\, and where they are now\, as well as thoughts about the current “state of the art\,” and what to look for in the future. Dancer/choreographers Kathy Lucas and Jim Self will be moderating. \nKathy Lucas is a dancer\, choreographer\, and unconventional fitness trainer with over 30 years’ experience in movement arts. She is a co-founder and collaborator of 5 Sisters Performing Arts\, Ithaca NY where she teaches several fusion-style dance classes and facilitates monthly meetups of movement and storytelling through grief and loss. She graduated with a theatre and dance focus from SUNY Brockport\, and locally\, Kathy has produced\, choreographed\, and performed in several music and dance projects. \nJim Self\, described as a “post-modern bad boy” and a “uniquely eccentric artist\,” by the Village Voice works in dance\, painting\, performance\, writing\, and installation. A New York Dance and Performance Award (Bessie) winner\, and Cornell dance faculty from 1989- 2014\, he has been a member of the New York State DanceForce since 2007 and created June Dance at the Cherry. \n“SPEAKING DANCE WISE: roundtable reflections with Tompkins County long term dancers\, movers and shakers” is made possible with funds from the NYS DanceForce\, a partnership program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature.

The ones who check their phones\, letting their children get injured on the playground; who let their children walk home alone. Because of one moment of poor judgement\, a host of government officials will now determine if Frida is a candidate for a Big Brother-like institution that measures the success or failure of a mother’s devotion. \nFaced with the possibility of losing Harriet\, Frida must prove that a bad mother can be redeemed. His debut YA novel\, “If I Can Give You That” (Quill Tree)\, comes out February 28th\, 2023. Although originally from Tennessee\, Gray currently resides in Ithaca\, New York with his polydactyl cat\, Hermes.

She has led contemplative journeys in a clear-cut forest\, Ground Zero in New York\, the Sahara Desert\, and other places. She lives in Ithaca\, New York

Appraisers have the resources to direct you to the correct professionals for this.\nConstruction possibilities of old tops and blocks. Appraisals are completed in private with the owner. The quilt is examined\, measured\, and photographed. Cathy then conducts research to determine the current fair market value for the quilt. Completed written appraisal is sent to the owner within two weeks. \nLimited appointments are available Saturday Feb 25th\, if there is a lot of interest\, we will host another appraisal program in the spring. \nMEET CATHY\nCathy Rosa Klimaszewski is a professional quilt appraiser\, educator\, and consultant. She has curated numerous quilt exhibitions shown at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art\, Cornell University\, including shows that traveled to the Brandywine River Museum\, New York State Museum\, and Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State University. Klimaszewski also presents quilt lectures and has taught classes related to quilt history\, design\, and care. She is retired from her position as Associate Director/Harriet Ames Charitable Trust Curator of Education at the Johnson Museum after 32 years with the institution. Klimaszewski received a B.F.A. in Art Education and a M.F.A. in Museum Studies from Syracuse University where she also took studio courses in fiber and textile arts.
