SUMMARY:China in Global Capitalism: Building international solidarity against imperial rivalry\, a conversation with Eli Friedman and Kelvin Lin
DESCRIPTION:From trade wars and pandemic politics to rioting workers\, intercontinental balloons\, and battles over TikTok\, the US-China relationship has become increasingly hostile in recent years. Whether in the form of overtly racist rhetoric and aggressive trade actions\, or the more buttoned down but equally antagonistic efforts to oppose Chinese interests abroad\, the US has made clear that it has no interest in giving up its position as global hegemon. This seemingly endless cycle of nationalism\, jingoism\, and reactionary politics on both sides of the Pacific suggests a downward spiral that could plausibly result in catastrophic military confrontation. \nEli Friedman teaches in the Department of Global Labor and Work at Cornell University. His most recent book is *The Urbanization of People: Development\, Labor Markets\, and Schooling in the Chinese City*. \nKevin Lin writes about labor and capitalism in China. \n*China in Global Capitalism*forcefully makes the case that workers and socially marginalized people in *both* the US and China must oppose our rulers’ claims that they have our best interests in mind as they ratchet up their rivalry. Rather\, if we’re to avert nuclear calamity\, we must oppose imperialism in all its forms\, and regardless of its source and rhetoric.

SUMMARY:Liberated to the Bone: Book Talk with Susan Raffo
DESCRIPTION:Susan Raffo is the author of Liberated to the Bone\, part of adrienne maree brown’s Emergent Strategy Series from AK Press. She is also currently spending a year walking from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and will be in Ithaca as part of that walk. This event is going to be a mix of conversation and practice\, all of it sitting around the question guiding her walk: what does it mean to live on this land in a good way – together. This is not an idealistic question\, but a deeply practical one embedded with 500+ years of colonial and racial violence and so much resistance\, reclamation and remembering. This question holds in its heart the fact of genocide\, of climate destruction\, and of increasing surveillance technologies that depend on eugenic profiling to determine who fits and who doesn’t and also the fact that within a week of closing down capitalism in light of COVID\, wolves were spotted walking through Minnesota cities. Raffo’s work is grounded in healing justice and her work in Minneapolis has included being part of healing justice and abolition strategies.

SUMMARY:Unleashing the Power of the List Poem
DESCRIPTION:With Wren Tuatha. Does making a list into a poem sound like cheating? It’s possible that poems you remember most are based on lists\, whether you detected them or not. Begin with Major Jackson’s “Why I Write Poetry”… Utilizing countless forms\, voices\, and shapes\, a list can really make your topic pop off the page and perform. The list is a surprising way to illuminate what’s at stake in your subject. Sometimes lighthearted\, sometimes profound\, a list poem can hook your reader in a compelling\, unforgettable\, and imminently accessible way. Sharing examples from poets Ellen Bass\, Tracy K. Smith\, Kwame Dawes\, Oliver de la Paz\, Diane Seuss\, Allison Joseph\, Chen Chen\, Molly Fisk\, Walt Whitman\, and more\, Ithaca Poetry Center director and published poet Wren Tuatha will share their favorite list poems and support participants in starting their own dynamic poems using this flexible craft strategy.
