DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the grand opening of our exhibit\, “Trains\, Planes\, and Automobiles: Buses\, Boats\, and Bikes.”  \nGrand Opening Schedule – February 7\, 2025: \n10:00 AM – Exhibit opens to the public.\n5:00-8:00 PM – Gallery Night in Downtown Ithaca.\n6:15 PM – Public Reception with Musical Living History Performance \nOpening Reception\nTo celebrate the creation of a new exhibit exploring the storied past of how-we-get-places we invite you to a preview performance of the “THE AWFUL WRACK of the FRONTENAC and the COWARDICE of MEN.” This living history musical performance tells the story of a 1907 maritime disaster that took place on Cayuga Lake\, featuring singer/songwriter Ted Walsh with unexpected appearance of the Lost Survivor/Orphan News Boy. Lifejackets optional.

DESCRIPTION:Tickets are $20/person. Pre-registration required.\nAlthough Ithaca might be better known for its gorges\, vibrant community\, and colleges\, it also holds a macabre past. Find yourself face to face with the most haunted archival items in our collections (original murder masks\, and items from unsolved crimes!) and explore the Haunted History of Downtown Ithaca with Heritage Ambassadors Sherri La Torre and Ben Sandberg. Dive into true stories of murder\, jealousy\, and insanity drawn directly from our archival collections. This program is for ages 16 to 116. \nThe tour will take about 1 hour and 15 minutes of walking in Downtown Ithaca. \nExplore more of our Haunted October events at The History Center at thehistorycenter.net/haunted-history \nAll tours will begin in the atrium of the Tompkins Center for History & Culture on the Ithaca Commons.

SUMMARY:Ithaca Canoe Fest
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural festival reframes the International Finger Lakes Dragon Boat Festival to center historic and contemporary boating on Cayuga Lake. The schedule of events and programs explore some of the many ways people have boated on Cayuga Lake. \nMay 7th Schedule \n10:00am – Words Before All Else (Maybe Thanksgiving address??): Open Canoe Fest with an introduction ceremony. Sachem Sam George will provide the Words Before All Else\, a traditional Haudenosaunee welcome blessing. \n10:30am (ish) – Open Paddling Session: Join Hickory Edwards\, of the Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey\, for an open paddling session. This session invites dragon boaters and canoers to paddle across the inlet together and spend time enjoying boating on the water. \n12:00pm – Canoe Gifting: Students in the Cornell Dyson School senior capstone AEM 4940: Outdoor Recreation Economy spent the semester building a 16-foot-long cedar strip canoe\, which will be donated to the Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey. Join our communal ceremony were Professor of Practice Trent Preszler and students will gift the canoe to support the Haudenosaunee’s programs that guide youth from the Onondaga Nation on a 13-day paddling expedition across the ancestral waterways of the Haudenosaunee peoples. \n1:00pm – Awakening of the Dragon Ceremony: The traditional Chinese Eye Dotting ceremony\, “The Awakening of The Dragons\,” features local and visiting dignitaries who paint red dots on the eyes of the ceremonial dragon boat figureheads to officially “wake” them up and kick-off the Dragon Boat race and its season. The event includes a traditional colorful lion dance to bless the event\, the paddlers\, and the boats. \n1:45pm – Dragon Boating: Gather your friends and engage some friendly dragon boat racing sponsored by the Ithaca Dragon Boat Club. No experience needed\, but registration is required! \n4:00pm – Closing Celebration \n. \nLAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT This event will take place in the traditional and contemporary lands of the Gayogo̱hó:nǫ’ Nation (Cayuga)\, one of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy.
