SUMMARY:Traverse Tompkins Annual Fundraiser - Building Bridges
DESCRIPTION:Building Bridges – Historic Bridges Across Tompkins County\nSEPTEMBER 23RD – 24TH \nTraverse Tompkins started in the fall of 2020 as a unique fundraiser to support The History Center in Tompkins County during the COVID-19 pandemic. Executive Director Benjamin Sandberg biked all around the county\, live streaming videos exploring historical points of interest in each municipality. His challenge was to ride as many miles as possible in a single 24-hour period. We now invite all of our community to join us as we Traverse Tompkins and discover local history. \nThe basic premise is simple – how many miles can you bike\, run\, paddle\, or travel in a 24-hour period and how much can you learn about Tompkins County bridges while exploring? Support a registered cyclist or runner\, or register to join us this year! \nThere are two ways to participate and join the effort to keep our history alive. \nOption 1: Sign up for free and commit to asking your community for pledges to support your travels. Fueled by your obvious love for history and Tompkins County\, reach out to your friends\, family\, and colleagues to pledge their support for your challenge. Their pledge – of any amount – gets calculated after you complete your mileage. \nOption 2: Buy an entry ticket! Asking for pledges isn’t for everyone\, but Traverse Tompkins should be. Your ticket price goes directly towards supporting The History Center’s mission\, and you still get to explore the bridges of Tompkins County! \nFind out more on our campaign site: https://charity.pledgeit.org/BuildingBridgesSupport Traverse Tompkins: Building Bridges | PledgeIt for Charities \nLearn more at thehistorycenter.net/traverse-tompkins and see our highlights from Facing Floods in 2022\, and Finding Fires in 2021.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: 'Genderqueer Pioneers: The Lavender Hill Legacy'
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit on display at the Cherry Gallery August 4th-September 17th \nWHEN: Exhibit Opening August 4th – 5-8pm \nExhibit on display weekends 1-5pm – August 4th-September 17th \nWHERE: The Cherry Gallery\, 130 Cherry St\, Ithaca NY 14850 \nIn 1973\, a brave group of big city homosexuals left the disparaging metropolis and bought a piece of land together out in Danby. They built shelters\, they planted gardens\, and they partied. A lot. They called themselves the Lavender Hill Collective. \nSo much has changed since 1973. What used to be unspoken – and even censured! – about gender identity is now part of everyday vocabulary and culture. Reverence for the earth and home-grown food is as mainstream as “supermarkets” and more idealized than “convenience.” Communities of makers\, maker spaces\, and other artist groups sustain and unite us as politics urges us to split apart. \nWith this exhibition\, we celebrate the Lavender Hill collective as pioneering genderqueer artists. Along with art made by members of the collective\, we are also showing some contemporary pieces that channel the Lavender Hill legacy. After the commune itself ended\, their openness to love and adventure\, land and community endures. \nThis exhibition is co-presented by The Cherry Arts\, and The History Center in Tompkins County and curated by Judy Swann and Laurence Clarkberg. \n. \nLAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT \nThis event will take place in the traditional and contemporary lands of the Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫˀ Nation (Cayuga)\, one of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. SUMMARY:Book Talk: Unionizing the Ivory Tower: Cornell Workers' Fifteen-Year Fight for Justice and a Living Wage
DESCRIPTION:WHEN: Wednesday\, September 6th\, 5:30-6:30pm \nWHERE: CAP ArtSpace in the Tompkins Center for History & Culture on the Ithaca Commons – 110 North Tioga St. Ithaca NY 14850. \nThis event is FREE\, the room can accommodate up to 45 attendants. If we reach capacity\, doors will close 5 minutes before the program is set to begin. \nABOUT THE EVENT \nJoin us for a BOOK TALK the week of Labor Day with author Al Davidoff\, the Cornell student leader who became a custodian and the union’s first president\, for a panel discussion on his newest work ‘Unionizing the Ivory Tower: Cornell Workers’ Fifteen-Year Fight for Justice and a Living Wage’. \nUnionizing the Ivory Tower chronicles how a thousand low-paid custodians\, cooks\, and gardeners succeeded in organizing a union at Cornell University. Al Davidoff\, the Cornell student leader who became a custodian and the union’s first president\, tells the extraordinary story of these ordinary workers with passion\, sensitivity\, and wit. \nHis memoir reveals how they took on the dominant power in the community\, built a strong organization\, and waged multiple strikes and campaigns for livable wages and their dignity. Their strategies and tactics were creative and feisty\, founded on worker participation and ownership. \nThe union’s commitment to fairness\, equity\, and economic justice also engaged these workers—mostly rural\, white\, and conservative—at the intersections of racism\, sexism\, classism\, and homophobia. Davidoff’s story demonstrates how a fighting union can activate today’s working class to oppose antidemocratic and white supremacist forces. \nEvent Collaborators: \nOur thanks to Cornell Press for publishing this important work chronicling local union history\, Odyssey Bookstore for coordinating sales of the book following the panel\, and The History Center in Tompkins County for hosting. \nPURCHASE THE BOOK \n—————————————- \nLand Acknowledgement \nThis event will take place in the traditional and contemporary lands of the Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫˀ Nation (Cayuga)\, one of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. DESCRIPTION:WHEN: Friday June 16th\, 5:30-6:30pm \nWHERE: CAP ArtSpace\, Located inside the Tompkins Center for History & Culture\, 110 N Tioga St\, Ithaca NY 14850 \nQ&A: With members of Lavender Hill; David Hirsch & Yvonne Fisher \nIn 1973\, a motley group of young writers\, artists\, political activists\, and recent college graduates purchased over 80 acres of land outside West Danby\, New York to build\, with their own hands\, a two story home that became Lavender Hill — one of the few gay and lesbian communes in the Back to the Land movement. After the 45 minute documentary\, hear from both Hickory Edwards (Onondaga) about his experience rediscovering the historic pathways of the “Peacemaker” through his canoe journey\, and Trent on the history of boat building in his life in a panel discussion about their journeys to connect to family and community legacies through canoes. \nSCHEDULE OF EVENTS \n6:45pm – Doors open \n7:00pm – Introduction of Little and Often\, written by Trent Preszler\, with joined book signing. \n7:30pm – Screening of Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey \n8:15pm – Talkback with Hickory Edwards of the Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey\, and Trent Preszler discussing the role of canoes and boats in engaging with family/community inheritance and legacy. \n8:45pm – Conclusion of event. \nABOUT THE PRESENTERS \nLittle and Often: A Memoir – A USA Today Best Book of the Year\, Little and Often is the beautiful memoir of grief\, love\, the shattered bond between a father and son\, and the resurrection of a broken heart. Trent Preszler tells his story with the same level of art and craftsmanship that he brings to his boat making. Preszler’s only inheritance was a beat-up wooden toolbox that had belonged to his father\, who was a cattle rancher\, rodeo champion\, and Vietnam War Bronze Star Medal recipient. This family heirloom befuddled Preszler. He did not work with his hands—but maybe that was the point. In his grief\, he wondered if there was still a way to understand his father\, and with that came an epiphany: he would make something with his inheritance. Having no experience or training in woodcraft\, driven only by blind will\, he decided to build a wooden canoe\, and he would aim to paddle it on the first anniversary of his father’s death \nHaudenosaunee Canoe Journey – Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey is an adventurous firsthand account of one Onondaga man\, Hickory Edwards\, who has devoted his life to the rediscovery of the path of the “Peace Maker.” Relying on knowledge from elders and intuition to guide his team in the right direction\, Hickory Edwards hopes to navigate the full waterways and travelling routes long forgotten by his people. The documentary follows that thirteen-day journey\, exploring the ancient waterways of the five founding Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. It’ll also feature the evolving relationship between Hickory and his daughter\, Ellie as he tries to teach her about her people\, their ways and their culture. \n.\nLAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT\nThis event will take place in the traditional and contemporary lands of the Gayogo̱hó:nǫ’ Nation (Cayuga)\, one of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. SUMMARY:HistoryForge: Mapping Your Family History (Virtual Program)
DESCRIPTION:HistoryForge: Mapping Your Family History (Virtual Program) w/ Eve Snyder \nWHEN: Tuesday May 2nd at 2:30pm \nWHERE: Virtual \nPRESENTER: Eve Snyder\, HistoryForge Project Director \nRegister for free on The History Center website \nHistoryForge began with the idea of using historic maps as portals to information about a community. Its integration of historic maps\, census information\, photographs and archival documents provides a unique way for people to visualize and explore their local history through the people who lived there and the buildings and neighborhoods they lived in. HistoryForge also enables family historians to explore the community context which helped shaped the lives of their ancestors. HistoryForge began in Ithaca\, NY in 2016 at The History Center in Tompkins County. Its founders wanted to develop a platform that could be replicated in communities across the United States. Since 2020 it has expanded in Tompkins County and to other communities in New York and beyond. \nJoin Eve Snyder\, HistoryForge’s Director\, to learn more about this unique project and how to get involved. Eve Snyder\, PhD Eve Snyder is the Historian at The History Center in Tompkins County (THC) and the Project Director for THC’s open-source community digital history project\, HistoryForge. During her graduate studies\, she developed a passion for the digital humanities as a tool for increasing public engagement in history. \nThis event is hosted in collaboration with the Genealogy Center. \nAbout HistoryForge \nHistoryForge is a digital history project from The History Center in Tompkins County which combines historic maps and photos with census records of the people who lived in Ithaca\, creating a way to visualize the history of Ithaca in the early 1900s. Learn more about the project here and the start of our database creation. \nNot available Saturdays but interested?\nContact Eve at HistoryForge@thehistorycenter.net \nThe HistoryForge project has been made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom. \nThe HistoryForge: Mapping Census Data to Visualize Local History grant was awarded in 2022-2024 through NEH’s Digital Humanities Advancement Grant program. The project was also selected to receive funding through NEH’s A More Perfect Union initiative.
