DESCRIPTION:Exhibit on display at the Cherry Gallery August 4th-September 17th \nWHEN: Exhibit Opening August 4th – 5-8pm \nExhibit on display weekends 1-5pm – August 4th-September 17th \nWHERE: The Cherry Gallery\, 130 Cherry St\, Ithaca NY 14850 \nIn 1973\, a brave group of big city homosexuals left the disparaging metropolis and bought a piece of land together out in Danby. They built shelters\, they planted gardens\, and they partied. A lot. They called themselves the Lavender Hill Collective. \nSo much has changed since 1973. What used to be unspoken – and even censured! – about gender identity is now part of everyday vocabulary and culture. Reverence for the earth and home-grown food is as mainstream as “supermarkets” and more idealized than “convenience.” Communities of makers\, maker spaces\, and other artist groups sustain and unite us as politics urges us to split apart. \nWith this exhibition\, we celebrate the Lavender Hill collective as pioneering genderqueer artists. Along with art made by members of the collective\, we are also showing some contemporary pieces that channel the Lavender Hill legacy. If we reach capacity\, doors will close 5 minutes before the program is set to begin. \nABOUT THE EVENT \nJoin us for a BOOK TALK the week of Labor Day with author Al Davidoff\, the Cornell student leader who became a custodian and the union’s first president\, for a panel discussion on his newest work ‘Unionizing the Ivory Tower: Cornell Workers’ Fifteen-Year Fight for Justice and a Living Wage’. \nUnionizing the Ivory Tower chronicles how a thousand low-paid custodians\, cooks\, and gardeners succeeded in organizing a union at Cornell University. Al Davidoff\, the Cornell student leader who became a custodian and the union’s first president\, tells the extraordinary story of these ordinary workers with passion\, sensitivity\, and wit. \nHis memoir reveals how they took on the dominant power in the community\, built a strong organization\, and waged multiple strikes and campaigns for livable wages and their dignity. Their strategies and tactics were creative and feisty\, founded on worker participation and ownership. \nThe union’s commitment to fairness\, equity\, and economic justice also engaged these workers—mostly rural\, white\, and conservative—at the intersections of racism\, sexism\, classism\, and homophobia. Led by Marie Warda from 11th Hour Barn Quilts. Marie is an experienced quilter\, crafter and barn quilt artist. She has taught quilt classes at a national conference\, instructed children ages 8-12 with beginner sewing lessons\,\nand most recently is providing workshops on barn quilt artistry. Marie currently has a barn quilt hanging in a gallery in Rochester NY and is part of a national barn quilt competition in North Carolina. This tour is an excellent introduction to many facets of local community\, intriguing personalities\, and historic sites downtown. \nThis one-hour walking tour is led by Alan Cohen\, a docent at The History Center in Tompkins County. \nAll tours will meet in the atrium of the Tompkins Center for History & Culture (110 N Tioga St) on the Ithaca Commons. \n——————————— \nACCESSIBILITY – This guided tour is wheelchair and mobility device friendly! The tour traverses 0.4 miles of flat paved surfaces in Downtown Ithaca. The tour will be presented in English. Who were the sewing machine agents of the 20th century and what can they tell us about home sewing habits? How can you identify a Ithacan from 1890 who held the patent for more than 27 toy designs\, but has no occupation code on her census sheet? \nJoin Eve Snyder into an exploration for how we can use the wealth of information available on the Tompkins County HistoryForge project (tompkins.historyforge.net) to discover and understand the role of textile manufacturers\, home sewing\, and the exclusion of “women’s work” in the census records of Tompkins County. Inspired by our current exhibit Knot Sew Fast Eve will share methods on how to use HistoryForge as a hyper-local research tool\, and highlight some unknown stories of local workers and industries along the way. \nJoin Eve Snyder\, HistoryForge’s Director\, to learn more about this unique project and how to use it to research occupation and industry in Tompkins County. PhD Eve Snyder is the Historian at The History Center in Tompkins County (THC) and the Project Director for THC’s open-source community digital history project\, HistoryForge. DESCRIPTION:WHEN: Friday June 16th\, 5:30-6:30pm \nWHERE: CAP ArtSpace\, Located inside the Tompkins Center for History & Culture\, 110 N Tioga St\, Ithaca NY 14850 \nQ&A: With members of Lavender Hill; David Hirsch & Yvonne Fisher \nIn 1973\, a motley group of young writers\, artists\, political activists\, and recent college graduates purchased over 80 acres of land outside West Danby\, New York to build\, with their own hands\, a two story home that became Lavender Hill — one of the few gay and lesbian communes in the Back to the Land movement. In a time when over a dozen “straight” communes thrived in Tompkins County outside Ithaca\, Lavender Hill\, which expanded to include several homes across the property\, was a remarkable experiment in collaboration\, gender exploration\, and social and political integration between young gay and lesbians in the post-Stonewall era. \nThis event will be opened by Dr. Jeffry Iovannone and include items displayed from the personal collections of Lavender Hill. \nQ&A with members of Lavender Hill and the History Center staff following screening. \nPre-registration not required. Who were the sewing machine agents of the 20th century and what can they tell us about home sewing habits? How can you identify a Ithacan from 1890 who held the patent for more than 27 toy designs\, but has no occupation code on her census sheet?  \nJoin Eve Snyder into an exploration for how we can use the wealth of information available on the Tompkins County HistoryForge project (tompkins.historyforge.net) to discover and understand the role of textile manufacturers\, home sewing\, and the exclusion of “women’s work” in the census records of Tompkins County. Inspired by our current exhibit Knot Sew Fast Eve will share methods on how to use HistoryForge as a hyper-local research tool\, and highlight some unknown stories of local workers and industries along the way. \nJoin Eve Snyder\, HistoryForge’s Director\, to learn more about this unique project and how to use it to research occupation and industry in Tompkins County. Author Trent Preszler will introduce his book Little and Often: A Memoir\, followed by a screening of the 2020 Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey documentary. After the 45 minute documentary\, hear from both Hickory Edwards (Onondaga) about his experience rediscovering the historic pathways of the “Peacemaker” through his canoe journey\, and Trent on the history of boat building in his life in a panel discussion about their journeys to connect to family and community legacies through canoes. \nSCHEDULE OF EVENTS \n6:45pm – Doors open \n7:00pm – Introduction of Little and Often\, written by Trent Preszler\, with joined book signing. \n7:30pm – Screening of Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey \n8:15pm – Talkback with Hickory Edwards of the Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey\, and Trent Preszler discussing the role of canoes and boats in engaging with family/community inheritance and legacy. \n8:45pm – Conclusion of event. \nABOUT THE PRESENTERS \nLittle and Often: A Memoir – A USA Today Best Book of the Year\, Little and Often is the beautiful memoir of grief\, love\, the shattered bond between a father and son\, and the resurrection of a broken heart. Trent Preszler tells his story with the same level of art and craftsmanship that he brings to his boat making. Preszler’s only inheritance was a beat-up wooden toolbox that had belonged to his father\, who was a cattle rancher\, rodeo champion\, and Vietnam War Bronze Star Medal recipient. This family heirloom befuddled Preszler. He did not work with his hands—but maybe that was the point. In his grief\, he wondered if there was still a way to understand his father\, and with that came an epiphany: he would make something with his inheritance. Having no experience or training in woodcraft\, driven only by blind will\, he decided to build a wooden canoe\, and he would aim to paddle it on the first anniversary of his father’s death \nHaudenosaunee Canoe Journey – Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey is an adventurous firsthand account of one Onondaga man\, Hickory Edwards\, who has devoted his life to the rediscovery of the path of the “Peace Maker.” Relying on knowledge from elders and intuition to guide his team in the right direction\, Hickory Edwards hopes to navigate the full waterways and travelling routes long forgotten by his people. The documentary follows that thirteen-day journey\, exploring the ancient waterways of the five founding Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. HistoryForge also enables family historians to explore the community context which helped shaped the lives of their ancestors. HistoryForge began in Ithaca\, NY in 2016 at The History Center in Tompkins County. Its founders wanted to develop a platform that could be replicated in communities across the United States.
