In this interactive workshop with Emily Sun Li and Tommy McAree\, we’ll explore how to craft authentic voices across picture books\, middle grade\, and young adult fiction. We’ll begin with a guided discussion on narrative voice\, analyzing syntax\, diction\, and tone through standout examples from children’s literature. Drawing from The Magic Words by Cheryl Klein and Writing Picture Books by Ann Whitford Paul\, we’ll examine techniques that shape a narrator’s voice and deepen reader connection. In small groups\, participants will analyze real texts to identify language choices that define audience. Next\, we’ll introduce a “character mining” strategy to help develop distinctive voices. Participants will then draft a short piece using guided prompts or a fun challenge involving randomly assigned narrator traits. We’ll wrap up with a group share and feedback session. SUMMARY:Passing Through: Portraits of Gender Rebellion - Ithaca's First Friday Gallery Night
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features a collection of paintings by Dominican-American artist\, Isa Goico (they/elle). Their practice focuses on the intersection of self-mythology and gender liberation. Goico utilizes photographic queer archive\, community members\, and local drag artists as inspiration. \nPassing Through is a compilation of paintings that reflect the unique individual experience of gender. “In painting queer individuals in everyday settings\, I am celebrating the impact trans lives have on the Ithaca community at large. The portraits aim to honor and thank the Ithacans that are bravely themselves in an increasingly anti-trans political climate.” \nThe exhibition features a series of small gouache paintings on scrap board salvaged in Ithaca. In addition to the serial work\, the exhibition features 3 large scale oil portraits completed during Goico’s time as an undergraduate at Cornell.  Ithaca First Fridays Gallery Night – Passing Through: Portraits of Gender Rebellion is going to be the title of the event as we go forward to create social media and other content to promote the event.

DESCRIPTION:Recovering Your Creative Spirit with Brenna Fitzgerald. Are you feeling stuck\, uninspired\, or unfulfilled? Is something within you longing to be expressed? In this workshop we will explore the feeling of being creatively stuck and how it affects (and is affected by) our inner and outer worlds. Through written reflection\, group discussion\, mind-body practices\, and intuitive collage I will guide participants into a deeper understanding of their own creative blocks. We will examine how fluctuating states of writer’s block and creative flow are normal and learn strategies for finding balance through these changes. Together we will create a safe and supportive container for each person to begin the process of shifting from stuck to unstuck. My intention is to facilitate awareness of and curiosity around your needs and desires and to share tools and practices to help you sustain a fulfilling creative flow well beyond the workshop.

DESCRIPTION:Poet and science educator Lee Cotman will guide participants in creating their own “blackout” poem from a formal scientiDisfic abstract. In a blackout poem\, the writer chooses an existing document and obscures all but a few selected words; the remaining words create the poem. This process puts the writer in direct conversation\, not only with the words on the page\, but with the historical context\, power structures\, and biases underlying their chosen text. This workshop will begin with a brief discussion of the form and what makes a blackout poem effective\, with examples by celebrated Black and Indigenous writers. We will then transition into a three-step\, generative writing exercise\, and close with an opportunity to share your draft. Open to writers of all ages and experience levels!

If we reach capacity\, doors will close 5 minutes before the program is set to begin. \nABOUT THE EVENT \nJoin us for a BOOK TALK the week of Labor Day with author Al Davidoff\, the Cornell student leader who became a custodian and the union’s first president\, for a panel discussion on his newest work ‘Unionizing the Ivory Tower: Cornell Workers’ Fifteen-Year Fight for Justice and a Living Wage’. \nUnionizing the Ivory Tower chronicles how a thousand low-paid custodians\, cooks\, and gardeners succeeded in organizing a union at Cornell University. Al Davidoff\, the Cornell student leader who became a custodian and the union’s first president\, tells the extraordinary story of these ordinary workers with passion\, sensitivity\, and wit. \nHis memoir reveals how they took on the dominant power in the community\, built a strong organization\, and waged multiple strikes and campaigns for livable wages and their dignity. Their strategies and tactics were creative and feisty\, founded on worker participation and ownership. \nThe union’s commitment to fairness\, equity\, and economic justice also engaged these workers—mostly rural\, white\, and conservative—at the intersections of racism\, sexism\, classism\, and homophobia. Who were the sewing machine agents of the 20th century and what can they tell us about home sewing habits? How can you identify a Ithacan from 1890 who held the patent for more than 27 toy designs\, but has no occupation code on her census sheet? \nJoin Eve Snyder into an exploration for how we can use the wealth of information available on the Tompkins County HistoryForge project (tompkins.historyforge.net) to discover and understand the role of textile manufacturers\, home sewing\, and the exclusion of “women’s work” in the census records of Tompkins County. DESCRIPTION:WHEN: Friday June 16th\, 5:30-6:30pm \nWHERE: CAP ArtSpace\, Located inside the Tompkins Center for History & Culture\, 110 N Tioga St\, Ithaca NY 14850 \nQ&A: With members of Lavender Hill; David Hirsch & Yvonne Fisher \nIn 1973\, a motley group of young writers\, artists\, political activists\, and recent college graduates purchased over 80 acres of land outside West Danby\, New York to build\, with their own hands\, a two story home that became Lavender Hill — one of the few gay and lesbian communes in the Back to the Land movement. In a time when over a dozen “straight” communes thrived in Tompkins County outside Ithaca\, Lavender Hill\, which expanded to include several homes across the property\, was a remarkable experiment in collaboration\, gender exploration\, and social and political integration between young gay and lesbians in the post-Stonewall era. \nThis event will be opened by Dr. Jeffry Iovannone and include items displayed from the personal collections of Lavender Hill. \nQ&A with members of Lavender Hill and the History Center staff following screening. \nPre-registration not required. DESCRIPTION:Community Quiltmaking for Good w/ Brooktondale Community Center\, Dryden Thimble Therapy\, and Ellis Hollow Quilters \nWHEN: Thursday May 11th – 4-5:30pm \nWHERE: CAP ArtSpace Gallery (First Floor) in the Tompkins Center for History & Culture on the Ithaca Commons – 110 North Tioga St. Ithaca NY 14850. \nPRESENTERS: Brooktondale Community Center\, Dryden Thimble Therapy\, & Ellis Hollow Quilters\, moderated by Brigid Hubberman \nIt’s hard to imagine the Ellis Hollow Fair without its coveted quilt raffle\, or the Brooktondale Apple Festival without its annual quilt raffle. As these beloved items become family heirlooms\, what is sometimes not recognized is the uncounted hours of volunteer labor that goes into creating these local treasures each year. \nJoin members of the Ellis Hollow Quilters (Now in their 56th year)\, Dryden Thimble Therapy\, and the Brooktondale Community Center as they share and remember the decades of quilt work that have supported our community programs and initiatives.
