SUMMARY:Bye Bye Tiberias Screening at Cinemapolis
DESCRIPTION:About the Event \nBuffalo Street Books and Cinemapolis are partnering for another film screening and book sale double feature. Get some popcorn\, check out some books\, and enjoy the screening of Bye Bye Tiberius. \nAbout the Film \nIn her early twenties\, Hiam Abbass left her native Palestinian village to follow her dream of becoming an actress in Europe\, leaving behind her mother\, grandmother\, and seven sisters. Thirty years later\, her filmmaker daughter Lina returns with her to the village and questions for the first time her mother’s bold choices\, her chosen exile and the way the women in their family influenced both their lives. Set between past and present\, Bye Bye Tiberias pieces together images of today\, family footage from the nineties and historical archives to portray four generations of daring Palestinian women who keep their story and legacy alive through the strength of their bonds\, despite exile\, dispossession\, and heartbreak.

SUMMARY:Legacies of Canoes - Book Talk & Screening @ Cinemapolis
DESCRIPTION:Legacies of Canoes – Book Talk & Screening w/ Trent Preszler and Hickory Edwards \nWHEN: Saturday May 6th 2023\, 6:45-8:45pm \nWHERE: Cinemapolis\, 120 Green St Ithaca NY 14850. \nPRESENTERS: Trent Preszler author of Little & Often: A Memoir\, and Hickory Edwards (Onondaga) from Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey \nKick off ITHACA CANOE FEST (May 7th @ Cass Park) with a combined book talk and film screening examining family and community legacies through deeply personal canoe journeys. Author Trent Preszler will introduce his book Little and Often: A Memoir\, followed by a screening of the 2020 Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey documentary. After the 45 minute documentary\, hear from both Hickory Edwards (Onondaga) about his experience rediscovering the historic pathways of the “Peacemaker” through his canoe journey\, and Trent on the history of boat building in his life in a panel discussion about their journeys to connect to family and community legacies through canoes. \nSCHEDULE OF EVENTS \n6:45pm – Doors open \n7:00pm – Introduction of Little and Often\, written by Trent Preszler\, with joined book signing. \n7:30pm – Screening of Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey \n8:15pm – Talkback with Hickory Edwards of the Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey\, and Trent Preszler discussing the role of canoes and boats in engaging with family/community inheritance and legacy. \n8:45pm – Conclusion of event. \nABOUT THE PRESENTERS \nLittle and Often: A Memoir – A USA Today Best Book of the Year\, Little and Often is the beautiful memoir of grief\, love\, the shattered bond between a father and son\, and the resurrection of a broken heart. Trent Preszler tells his story with the same level of art and craftsmanship that he brings to his boat making. Preszler’s only inheritance was a beat-up wooden toolbox that had belonged to his father\, who was a cattle rancher\, rodeo champion\, and Vietnam War Bronze Star Medal recipient. This family heirloom befuddled Preszler. He did not work with his hands—but maybe that was the point. In his grief\, he wondered if there was still a way to understand his father\, and with that came an epiphany: he would make something with his inheritance. Having no experience or training in woodcraft\, driven only by blind will\, he decided to build a wooden canoe\, and he would aim to paddle it on the first anniversary of his father’s death \nHaudenosaunee Canoe Journey – Haudenosaunee Canoe Journey is an adventurous firsthand account of one Onondaga man\, Hickory Edwards\, who has devoted his life to the rediscovery of the path of the “Peace Maker.” Relying on knowledge from elders and intuition to guide his team in the right direction\, Hickory Edwards hopes to navigate the full waterways and travelling routes long forgotten by his people. The documentary follows that thirteen-day journey\, exploring the ancient waterways of the five founding Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. It’ll also feature the evolving relationship between Hickory and his daughter\, Ellie as he tries to teach her about her people\, their ways and their culture. \n.\nLAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT\nThis event will take place in the traditional and contemporary lands of the Gayogo̱hó:nǫ’ Nation (Cayuga)\, one of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy.
