SUMMARY:Puppet Homecoming 2024: Puppets are Gorges
DESCRIPTION:The Northeast & Mid-Atlantic regions of Puppeteers of America\, proudly present “Puppet Homecoming 2024” our next biannual regional puppetry festival to be held for the first time in the commons section of Ithaca\, NY. Are you a fan of the art of puppetry\, or maybe you’re not sure yet. Our festival will have something for all puppet interest\, from the puppet-curios to the professionals. We will have some family friendly shows and workshops as well as more advanced ones as well. This festival will feature 7 unique shows\, 21 different workshops\, street performances\, a Puppet SLAM (short form curated adult themed puppetry performances)\, a Potpourri (an open mic for puppeteers)\, a public puppetry store\, and a parade. The official festival will run from Friday November 1st through Sunday November 3rd\, and will have a separate professional day on Monday November 4th for PIET (Puppeteers in Education & Therapy). This festival is open to everyone\, however if you are a member of Puppeteers of America (PofA) you will get a discount (pro-tip\, the discount is the same price of a PofA membership). Registration for the full event is set to open on August 1st at: (https://www.puppeteers.org/puppet-homecoming). They happen in-person at the Tompkins Center for History & Culture on the Ithaca Commons usually in the Second Floor Conference Room. \nBe sure you’re on the email list to stay in the loop! APPLICATION REQUIRED for new volunteers – We need to do some behind-the-scenes prep-work for each session! \nWhat We’ll Be Doing \nHelp build the HistoryForge database for Tompkins County! We hold community transcription sessions twice a month on Saturdays from 11-1. In 2023 we will be working on the census records 1950 & 1870\, as well as for the Town of Caroline (1880-1950)\, and Trumansburg (1880-1950)! \nTo help with our behind the scenes processing of volunteer materials\, please complete the volunteer form at least 4 days before the session. \nComplete Volunteer Application \nHistoryForge is a digital mapping and transcription project from The History Center in Tompkins County. We need help digitizing information from the 1940 Ithaca census to add to our HistoryForge database! Volunteers will read through the handwritten census notes from 1940\, re-type/and or scan information about individuals\, buildings\, and businesses from that time period. \nYOU WILL NEED: A laptop or desktop computer\, stable internet connection. We have a limited number of volunteer laptops available. \nAbout HistoryForge \nHistoryForge is a digital history project from The History Center in Tompkins County which combines historic maps and photos with census records of the people who lived in Ithaca\, creating a way to visualize the history of Ithaca in the early 1900s. Appraisals are completed in private with the owner. The quilt is examined\, measured\, and photographed. Cathy then conducts research to determine the current fair market value for the quilt. Completed written appraisal is sent to the owner within two weeks. \nLimited appointments are available Saturday Feb 25th\, if there is a lot of interest\, we will host another appraisal program in the spring. \nMEET CATHY\nCathy Rosa Klimaszewski is a professional quilt appraiser\, educator\, and consultant. She has curated numerous quilt exhibitions shown at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art\, Cornell University\, including shows that traveled to the Brandywine River Museum\, New York State Museum\, and Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State University. Klimaszewski also presents quilt lectures and has taught classes related to quilt history\, design\, and care. She is retired from her position as Associate Director/Harriet Ames Charitable Trust Curator of Education at the Johnson Museum after 32 years with the institution. Klimaszewski received a B.F.A. in Art Education and a M.F.A. in Museum Studies from Syracuse University where she also took studio courses in fiber and textile arts.
