Working exclusively with porcelain\, Shawn finds beauty in its fragility\, transforming it into a testament of strength through the fiery kiln.\nHer art springs from nature’s forms\, each curve and contour infused with personal narrative\, weaving a tapestry of metaphor. Poetry and storytelling aren’t separate\, but rather the very essence of her sculptural creations\, exploring the profound unity between humanity and the natural world. “Nature doesn’t merely surround us; it is us\,” she emphasizes. \nShawn’s narratives are subtle\, intimate whispers designed to resonate deeply within the viewer’s imagination. SUMMARY:MIX Art Gallery presents "Interact with Abstract" art opening on Ithaca's Gallery Night\, Friday\, Feb. 8th 5-8PM
DESCRIPTION:February’s exhibition at MIX Art Gallery showcases a new face in the local art scene. Peter “Rafe” Harpending\, originally from Elmira\, NY\, now resides in Ithaca. With a naturally inquisitive spirit\, he describes his personality as a gradient of colors from yellow and orange to red. It’s no surprise that his drawings reflect his degree in Biology\, as his artistic interests focus on “living things” from various clades. While there are many detailed drawings of insects\, birds\, fish\, and more that will be available\, the highlighted works on our gallery walls will primarily be his mesmerizing abstracts.  \n“I must have had an innate urge to create a visual world\, starting at a very young age—perhaps as early as I could talk. Additionally\, my mother appreciated modern art\, and that early exposure motivated me to create.” Harpending draws inspiration primarily from modern abstract art\, and his biggest influences include Mondrian\, Klimt\, Dali\, Klee\, John McLaughlin\, Pollock\, and Georgia O’Keeffe\, among others. “I’m fascinated by the fact that humans are both ordered and biological beings!  The order represented in many of my geometric pieces is juxtaposed with disruptive visual elements.  This expresses an obsession with the tension between order and chaos\, the notion that humans can create a thin veneer of spatial and temporal structure\, but underneath lies the inevitable turbulent and maddening realm of nature.”  \nAlmost reminiscent of Native American art\, these abstract pieces are both compelling and captivating\, and whether on paper or simple board\, they are attractively priced. A must-see this February showing through March 1st\, 2025.

DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth McMahon\, “shape maker\,” is an artist whose love of color and happenstance has inspired her work from painting to songwriting\, puppetry to collage. She uses a collage process to build her large assemblages and smaller compositions with painted paper cut-outs\, colored tape\, and yarn. \nMcMahon studied Fashion at Parsons School of Design and Painting at Syracuse University. While raising a family\, she shifted her focus to puppetry and songwriting\, winning a Parent Choice Award for her recording\, Waltzing with Fireflies in 1994. Recent work has returned to the visual format\, showing with the Var Gallery\, Milwaukee 2020\, 64Arts\, Illinois 2021\, and a virtual solo exhibition facilitated by Roaring Artist Gallery 2022. \nThis September\, she will take over Mix Art Gallery with her latest work\, The Moon Tipped Her Hat\, OPENING on September 6th from 5-8 pm\, and running through September 28th.

DESCRIPTION:EYE SEE YOU will open on Friday\, March 1st\, at MIX Art Gallery at 156 “On the Commons” from 5-8PM and will run from March 1st-30th\, 2024. \nMIX Art Gallery is excited to announce this new\, multi-artist exhibition\, “EYE SEE YOU” opening on Gallery Night Ithaca\, Friday\, March 1st\, and will be on display from March 1-31st. This show includes abstract oil paintings on paper from Jeffrey Hansen’s Non-Zero-Sum Color Wheel Series. These striking and bold triptychs with primary and secondary color wheels are set against an atmosphere of neutral tones\, creating depth and a sense of serenity. MIX also hosts the black and white film photography of Wendy Gherity\, skillfully capturing street scenes of her old haunt in 1990’s Greenwich Village\, NY\, and finally\, an eye-popping film installation entitled “New Eyes” by local artist and former gallery owner\, Ben Bookout. \nJoin us at the opening reception Friday\, March 1st from 5-8 pm at MIX Art Gallery \n“The work is not complete until you are here to experience it ~ we’ll see you soon at MIX!” \nMIX Art Gallery is located on the Ithaca Commons (next to American Crafts by Robbie Dein) at 156 E. Based in Detroit\, Mirek is an artist who has committed the past 45 years to his creative journey of crafting distinctive artwork series. These series encompass a variety of materials\, including aluminum\, silicone rubber\, acrylic paints\, and more.
