SUMMARY:Navigating Childhood Anxiety: Empowering Caregivers with the SPACE Program
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday January 22nd from 5:30pm to 7:00Pm join Dr. Katrina Blomquist\, child clinical psychologist\, and Liz Allen\, Dean of Students at Elizabeth Ann Clune Montessori School and NAMI Program Committee Chair for a talk on childhood anxiety! We will be discussing the SPACE program for caregivers of anxious children. SPACE stands for Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions and is a parent-based treatment program for children and adolescents with anxiety\, OCD\, and related problems. SPACE was developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Study Center and has been tested and found to be efficacious in randomized controlled clinical trials. Caregivers who participate in SPACE will learn skills and tools to help their child overcome anxiety\, OCD or related problems. The program focuses on changes that parents can make to their own behavior; they do not need to make their child change. The two main changes that parents learn to make are to respond more supportively to their anxious child and to reduce the accommodations they have been making to the child’s symptoms.

SUMMARY:The Bike Month Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Make every ride count this May with the Bike Month Challenge! \nBrought to Ithaca by Love to Ride and GOIthaca\, the national #MakeEveryRideCount initiative aims to champion bike riding while harnessing the pedal power of bike riders across the country to generate data that will make biking better for everyone. \nSo\, how does it work? Once someone downloads the Love to Ride app and enjoys a bike ride\, they can use the Rate My Routes feature to show how comfortable they felt on different streets and paths. This feedback\, paired with anonymized trip data from other users\, can pinpoint the prime spots in your community calling out for better biking infrastructure! \nIt’s totally free to download the app and take part in the Bike Month Challenge. There are prizes up for grabs for anyone who logs a ride\, and even more can be won if someone encourages others to join! This May\, let’s #MakeEveryRideCount.

SUMMARY:HistoryForge: Mapping Your Family History (Virtual Program)
DESCRIPTION:HistoryForge: Mapping Your Family History (Virtual Program) w/ Eve Snyder \nWHEN: Tuesday May 2nd at 2:30pm \nWHERE: Virtual \nPRESENTER: Eve Snyder\, HistoryForge Project Director \nRegister for free on The History Center website \nHistoryForge began with the idea of using historic maps as portals to information about a community. Its integration of historic maps\, census information\, photographs and archival documents provides a unique way for people to visualize and explore their local history through the people who lived there and the buildings and neighborhoods they lived in. HistoryForge also enables family historians to explore the community context which helped shaped the lives of their ancestors. HistoryForge began in Ithaca\, NY in 2016 at The History Center in Tompkins County. Its founders wanted to develop a platform that could be replicated in communities across the United States. Since 2020 it has expanded in Tompkins County and to other communities in New York and beyond. \nJoin Eve Snyder\, HistoryForge’s Director\, to learn more about this unique project and how to get involved. Eve Snyder\, PhD Eve Snyder is the Historian at The History Center in Tompkins County (THC) and the Project Director for THC’s open-source community digital history project\, HistoryForge. During her graduate studies\, she developed a passion for the digital humanities as a tool for increasing public engagement in history. \nThis event is hosted in collaboration with the Genealogy Center. \nAbout HistoryForge \nHistoryForge is a digital history project from The History Center in Tompkins County which combines historic maps and photos with census records of the people who lived in Ithaca\, creating a way to visualize the history of Ithaca in the early 1900s. Learn more about the project here and the start of our database creation. \nNot available Saturdays but interested?\nContact Eve at HistoryForge@thehistorycenter.net \nThe HistoryForge project has been made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom. \nThe HistoryForge: Mapping Census Data to Visualize Local History grant was awarded in 2022-2024 through NEH’s Digital Humanities Advancement Grant program. The project was also selected to receive funding through NEH’s A More Perfect Union initiative.
