“SPEAKING DANCE WISE #2: roundtable reflections with Tompkins County long term dancers, movers and shakers” comes to the Tompkins County Library in Downtown Ithaca on April 1, 2023.
April 1, 2023 @ 2:30 pm - 4:15 pm
Free
‘SPEAKING DANCE WISE’ #2 is part of a series of roundtable discussions providing opportunities for seasoned Tompkins County movement artists, ‘elders’, to share their knowledge and experience through conversations and presentations rooted in 20th and 21st century practices, expressions, and aesthetic shifts over multiple decades. This project responds to and engages with some of the many accomplished movement artists who have settled in the Ithaca area after multi-faceted national and international careers. The second ‘roundtable’ focuses on the work of video artist/documentarian Marilyn Rivchin, and the artist and choreographer Jim Self. This presentation will include a more visual focus, including images and videos from Self’s 50 years of dance making, and Rivchin’s extensive archive of dance documentation and original dance films with local movement artists from the 1970’s to the present.
Dancer and choreographer Kathy Lucas will be moderating a discussion that delves into the joys and challenges of life in the world of dance, performance, choreography, aesthetics, and documentation. Guests will be addressing specific questions about their beginnings, middle careers, and where they are now, as well as thoughts about the current “state of the art,” and what to look for in the future.
