Earth Pigment Painters

“Alexander Fals was raised in Naples, NY to. parents Lauren Sherwood (Naples, NY) and Roberto Fals (Popayan, Columbia). His parents are windows into a magical world where all things have beauty and mystery. The mineral pigments he uses are colors that have been underground in ancient volcanic deposits, lying dormant for centuries. Each color has a unique mineral composition, many of which are naturally flecked with Mika, stones and crystals.

Alexander blends his love for ecology, evolution and Columbia using.a technique regionally pioneered by his Uncles Henry and Billy Fals”” foraging for naturally occuring pigments and processing them into paint using a strong yet biodegradable adhesive. He currently spends each winter in Columbia painting with his partner and fellow mineral pigment painter Hayley Dayis.

Rochester, NY native Hayley Dayis was raised with an appreciation fror philosophy, the arts, and the natural cycles of land. The pigments that she uses in the creation of her current work infuse each piece with the subtle majesty of Earth’s color spectrum while paying homage to the reciprocity and dependency between people and land.

Upon attending a 2017 environmental event in Mexico, Hayley became disillusioned with washing chemical acrylic paints from her brushes down the drain and began to search for alternatives. This search led her to Alexander Fals, who introduced Hayley to his family’s technique of painting with foraged pigments from Columbia where she now lives and paints for half of each year returning to New York when the weather turns warm. “
