Opera Ithaca to end season in April with a unique horror-opera!
Opera Ithaca continues to be a space for interesting and daring opera with its final show of the season, The Turn of the Screw. This exciting piece has a unique place in opera history as one of very few in the horror genre. The opera, adapted from a novella by the legendary British-American author Henry James which served to popularize the ghost story as a genre, was composed by Benjamin Britten, with a libretto by Myfanwy Piper.
This is a mysterious ‘haunted house’ story. It centers on two parentless children, Miles and Flora, and their unnamed Governess, who is convinced that the children are being menaced by ghosts. It is never entirely clear whether the children can see the spirits, or if the Governess is imagining them. The tragic ending of the opera is colored by the same ambiguity.
A stellar cast includes soprano Lynn Craver as the Governess, soprano Celeste Morales as Mrs. Grose, tenor Gabriel Hernandez as Peter Quint, soprano, Melissa Wimbish as Miss Jessel, soprano, Emma Commisso as Flora, and male soprano Wyatt McDaniel as Miles.
Stage director Susannah Berryman will bring this work to life, together with music director Kristin Ditlow.
The Turn of the Screw will be performed April 19 and 21, 2024, at The Hangar Theater. Tickets may be purchased at https://hangartheatre.easy-ware-ticketing.com/events.
