Handwork Celebrates 50 Years as an Artist-Owned Cooperative in Ithaca

Handwork, Ithaca’s artist-owned cooperative, is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026 marking five decades of showcasing and supporting handmade work by artists from the Finger Lakes region. Founded in 1976, Handwork has been a longstanding cornerstone of the creative community here in Ithaca. What began as a collective effort by just twelve artists to create a space for selling their work and sharing the responsibility of running a storefront has grown into a thriving cooperative representing over 25 makers.

Today, the shop continues to offer a wide range of handcrafted goods, including jewelry, ceramics, textiles, dried floral arrangements, glass, woodworking, and fine art. The majority of what is available in the store is made by its artist members with the remaining products being filled in by other regional and national makers who fit the Co-op’s mission. The cooperative’s longevity reflects both the strength of its artist-led model and the enduring value both visitors and residents find in locally made, artisan work. This direct connection between maker and customer that has defined the store since its founding.

“Reaching 50 years is a powerful milestone, not just for Handwork, but for the entire community that has supported it,” said Julia Nelson, store manager. “This cooperative exists because of generations of artists and patrons who believe in the importance of handmade work and local creativity.”

Handwork’s cooperative model offers a rare opportunity for visitors to purchase directly from an artist-run business, where each piece carries a personal story and connection to the local landscape. The gallery has become a staple stop for those seeking meaningful souvenirs, gifts, and artwork that capture the character of Ithaca.

Over the past five decades, Handwork has remained rooted in its founding mission: to provide a space where regional artists can sustain their practices and connect with the public. The store has become a destination for both residents and visitors seeking meaningful, high-quality work that reflects the character of the Finger Lakes. As Ithaca continues to gain recognition as a vibrant cultural destination, Handwork’s 50-year history stands as a testament to the lasting impact of cooperative-led initiatives and the enduring appeal of artisan craft.
