Downtown Ithaca & GO ITHACA Hosting First LGBTQ+ History Walking Tour

Event includes stops at four historical sites and an after-party at Alley Cat Cafe

ITHACA NY JUNE 24, 2021 — In recognition of PRIDE month, The Downtown Ithaca Alliance (DIA) and its GO ITHACA program will host their first LGBTQIA+ History Walk on Saturday, June 26.
Members for the DIA and GO ITHACA invite you to join them at 3 p.m. at the Bernie Milton Pavilion on the Commons and then enjoy an educational and fun walkable tour. On this guided tour, attendees will learn about individual stories of queer activists, and the major political and social movements that have shaped the LGBTQIA+ community over time.

“Through this tour, we hope to introduce people to the many downtown businesses and public spaces that were sites of LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual) historical moments. Over the years a lot of those people and places that were a part of framing this history have been overlooked or forgotten. We need to recognize these people, places, and the history to help preserve their contribution to our community’s heritage,” says DIA Assistant Special Events Director Danny Palmer.

“We hope this tour will educate attendees about the rich history that exists here and also help them recognize downtown Ithaca as a walkable community. People can enjoy a lot of downtown activities without the need of using a vehicle,” adds GO ITHACA Program Director Lauren Gabuzzi.

After the walking tour, DIA and GO ITHACA will host a mini after party at Alley Cat Cafe, 312 E. Seneca St. in downtown Ithaca.
