Downtown Ithaca launches customer appreciation program to help stimulate shopping at local stores during COVID pandemic

$5 downtown gift card will be given to those who shop now at select stores

ITHACA NY APRIL 09, 2020 — The Downtown Ithaca Alliance (DIA) is looking to stimulate the downtown Ithaca economy and recognize those who are supporting the local businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To achieve these goals, the DIA is partnering with local businesses to provide a special incentive to folks who shop now at participating specialty stores.
Those loyal customers who buy products, gift cards or gift certificates from participating stores at this time will receive an additional gift of their own — a complimentary $5 Downtown Ithaca Gift Card (while supplies last) redeemable at over 100 businesses for when downtown’s shops reopen. This special incentive comes from the DIA, which is truly thankful for your continued support of the community’s local businesses during this difficult time.

In mid-March, New York State ordered all nonessential businesses to “pause” all in-store activity as a means to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, a decision that has been deeply detrimental to downtown Ithaca’s economy.

Since closing storefronts, many of downtown’s nonessential businesses, especially its independently owned and operated specialty shops, are taking a huge financial hit that may impact the future of their business. For these small businesses to stay afloat during the pandemic, they are relying on customer support now more than ever.

“Despite being deemed nonessential, many of our downtown shopkeepers worked extremely hard to develop creative and new meaningful ways for their customers to shop with them. Since customers can’t shop at the physical store locations right now, we want to show our appreciation to those folks who will use the alternative purchase methods — online shopping and buying gift certificates — from our downtown shops to help encourage sales during this challenging time,” says DIA Marketing Director, Allison Graffin.

“In the midst of the COVID-19 closures and limitations, our beloved downtown small businesses have experienced a tremendous amount of upheaval. The outpouring of support and love for one another is incredible and inspiring, and we want to contribute to recovery efforts,” adds Kristina Thelen, Business Outreach Coordinator for the non-profit organization.
