ITHACA, NY MARCH 17, 2021 — The City of Ithaca’s Green Street Garage will be closing for a reconstruction project starting this month. The public can expect to see traffic lane changes on East State Street starting next Monday followed by the temporary closure of the garage at the end of the month.
The traffic lanes on E. Green Street will be shifting to accommodate the Green Street Garage Redevelopment Project. Both lanes of traffic on E. Green Street will be shifted approximately 4 feet to the south between South Cayuga Street and the tuning fork. The lane shift will be in place for the duration of the demolition and subsequent redevelopment on Green Street. Due to this lane shift, the bicycle lane on this portion of E. Green Street will be closed while the lane shift is in place.
The Green Street Garage will be closed for parking on Monday, March 29, in anticipation of demolition and redevelopment. The garage’s reopening is anticipated for late Fall 2021. When complete, the new garage will include seven levels of parking, totaling 500 parking spaces. As the project progresses, temporary closures of the North lane (garage side) of East Green Street may be necessary to accommodate demolition and redevelopment operations. Pedestrian route detours will be posted to ensure continued safe access to Commons businesses and amenities during demolition and construction phases. Access to Cinemapolis, our indie film theatre on E. Green Street, will be available through the construction period.
While the garage is closed, parking and mobility alternatives will be available including the following:

ABOUT THE GREEN STREET RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT: The existing Green Street Garage on Green Street in downtown Ithaca will undergo demolition this spring to make way for necessary improvements. When completed, the new garage will feature a total of seven levels of parking, with an increase of 95 spaces. This project comes in combination with the Asteri and the Ithacan development projects. Together, these projects will result in the construction of two 11-story buildings, with 181 permanently affordable living units above a community conference center and 200 market-rate apartments. These projects will transform Green Street, with reimagined public spaces and much-needed infrastructure updates. Demolition of the existing garage is scheduled to begin in March 2021.
