SEPTEMBER 3, 2019 ITHACA, NY – More than a dozen Cornell University student performance groups are bringing their dynamic, crowd-pleasing acts to Downtown Ithaca this Saturday, Sept 7.

The student-led groups will perform between 1 and 5 p.m. at the Bernie Milton Pavilion on the Ithaca Commons pedestrian mall as part of CU Downtown, a special day where Downtown Ithaca welcomes thousands of Cornell students to the community. Cornell alums and the public are also welcome to attend this annual family-friendly event.

Cornell’s entertainment infused day includes performances from the Indian Folk dance group Cornell Bhangra, the vibrant and entertaining Big Red Marching Band and Pep Band performing as one; Absolute Zero Breakdance Club; Yamatai, Cornell’s only taiko drumming group; Cornell Lion Dance, a traditional Chinese performance blending martial arts and dance and thought to bring good luck and prosperity; and The Touchtones, Cornell’s first officially recognized a cappella group.

Plus, Fall Creek Brass Band, a local favorite, will play a wide variety of dance music from traditional New Orleans tunes to funk, hip-hop, and rock and roll to close out the day’s performances. All of these stellar performances will be open to the public to come and enjoy.

CU Downtown is organized by the Tatkon Center, a Cornell University support and resource center for first-year students, in partnership with the Cornell Office of Community Relations, the Downtown Ithaca Alliance, and Tompkins Consolidated Transit Authority (TCAT).

“CU Downtown presents a fantastic opportunity for Cornell alums and the general public to give a warm welcome to the new and returning students to the community. It’s also a prime opportunity for the community to learn about the programs CU has to offer and enjoy some extremely entertaining and fun student performances ” says Allison Graffin, marketing director for the Downtown Ithaca Alliance (DIA).
